Dear Haven readers,

Those of you who've read my handful of posts know that I try to be supportive and helpful, but now I find myself stuck. I have been unemployed since the end of September, and it is getting more and more difficult to job hunt. My depression has returned and I cannot afford the doctor fees to get my meds prescribed. I was in a major depressive episode when my business and I, personally, went through bankruptcy. I thought I was past it, but I am not.

I just need someone to tell me this will work out. I find myself approaching the end of my rope.

Thank you for reading this, and I remain
Your friend,

Ikari Gendo

You sound like a very thoughtful and respectful individual, and all-around decent guy. I'm glad you posted and humbled that you've decided to approach us for help.

You're absolutely right, things always change. And if they are the worst they can be right now, that means they can only get better. Or they may just get better even if you haven't hit bottom.

I find that it helps to keep in mind that depression is a kind of misinformation. My brain is under a deception whenever I'm feeling that bad.

You're in a difficult situation right now, but it doesn't mean there's anything bad about you. Lots of people have had to go through such things before; for some it wasn't even their fault, and even if it was, we're all human and we're allowed our mistakes.

There is always hope, and the first thing I hope for you is that you'll be able to put together at least enough money somehow to renew your prescription. Please keep in touch on the forums and update us with how things are going. I hope you will feel better very soon.

Please call your former doctor to see if he will renew the prescription over the phone. Explain your situation and maybe your doc can working out a payment arrangement with you, or defer payment until you get more financially solvent. I have had understanding doctors and therapists work with me when I found myself on financially hard times. If worse goes to worst then please see about going to an ER so a doctor there can get you some meds there. Do you have any health insurance? Can you go on SSI or collect Unemployment benefits? If I have more details maybe I can help you figure something out.

Ikari, I feel for you :-( Been there. Depression just sucks the energy out of you and prevents the ideas from flowing freely sometimes. Constant ruminations are another unwanted distraction. Things do get better.

Is there any free medical service around that can help?

I know you need your immediate needs met via a job hunt, but having some entrepreneurial project to think about may give you some hope again. Something that suits your temperament, interests, scalability, desired work environment, low-start up costs, etc? Depression may not make passion for an idea possible right now. Even if all you can muster is 15 minutes a day to pick away at the tasks involved. Or just go outside and sit in the sun and do nothing with a cup of tea, etc. Be gentle with yourself. Your energy levels are what they are and little swipes at productivity may be what it takes.

ThetaIn3D, mikassyna, and Adamantius,

Thank you for your kind words. This was the kick start I needed to get out and put in app at one of the local places seeking workers, rather than just sitting playing games on my computer this afternoon. They said, based on my application, to expect a call tomorrow to set up an interview.

Out of curiosity, Adamantius, where are you? The snow is still melting in my parking lot, so fifteen minutes outside is hardly what I consider relaxing, but thank you for the kind thoughts.

And to all my friends I say
Thank you,

Ikari Gendo

@Ikari

I'm in Australia. Today is cold and rainy though. What I was getting at is letting full spectrum light hit your eyes and Vit D3 from the sun when possible. I have a full spectrum light bulb in my desk lamp as well.

Hi- just wondering if there is a depression helpline that could guide you to free care in your area?
It can be very hard to cope on your own when you need medical help.

Ikari, it made my evening to hear that positive things are happening already and the gloom has lifted for you. I'm really excited that someone responded to your application already. It feels like a victory to me and I'm so happy for you.

This. ^^^ This is a profound and beautiful thought; one that's helped me before too.

To All of You,

Thank you for your support. I had two interviews, both at the same company. Apparently two different departments liked my application. I hope to hear back from either.

And I remain

Ikari, that's a great sign! I'm excited for you,

I don't want to make it sound like a sure thing in case something falls through; I wouldn't want it to be too big of a letdown, but 2 departments responding makes me cautiously optimistic. That just sounds promising.

Thank you so much for giving us the good news!

Theta

Good luck. Just remember all it takes is one yes.
