If it makes you feel any better, I didn't meet anyone who I could have an actual relationship with until I found my wife (we married when I was 32). Before that, there were plenty who wanted me for my money, my potential, my job, or certain parts of my anatomy; and they all fooled me for a little while into thinking that it was me they wanted.
I finally did my wife, and as far as I can tell, she actually likes me for the most part. I think it works well with us because we are both broken - just broken in a complementary fashion.
In all those lonely times, I found the best comfort was a calm feline friend.
