Hello, I am 19 and I am also a gamer and recently a few months ago this issue has really started to bother me. One of my teachers told the class that gaming was a absolute waste of time. And that the people who play games for a job is also weird to her as well. To me this is really insulting and completely offensive to me as a gamer because I find games better than watching tv or reading books in some ways. But my teacher has no problem with watching movies and tv shows... But I still worry about this. I sometimes think: Maybe I should delete my video games because that would make me a better person. Or maybe I shouldn't do what other people say or think of me as a gamer. I remember hearing her say the last video game that she played was Mario, so I assume that she was out of touch with gaming in general. This has been on my mind for a few months now and I have been battling in my head that gaming is not a waste of time and that it is benificial in some cases. I find it totaly ignorant to just lable an entire medium as a waste of time because you might just label all entertainment as one. How can I get over this issue and how can I bring up this discussion to my teachers that playing games is not a waste of time and that it is just like any other hobby like watching movies, or other things?

I wouldn't bother trying to convince anyone else.

fighter pilots and surgeons who play video games are better at their jobs, so there is definitely a benefit.

as long as you find time outside of gaming for physical exercise and socializing and whatever other responsibilities you have, enjoy your games.

Problems with that is my parents like to live in places where there is not a lot of people. The only time that I do go out of the house is to walk the dogs. I do have some friends but most of them go to my college at different times than when I do. So I often feel like I have no friends at all.

what you do on your own time is none of your teacher's business.

It is great that you do get exercise by walking your dogs. Also if it is possible to make friends with other students who play video games maybe that is an option or otherwise join a club that is offered at your school, etc.

There are so many other gamers you could meet and befriend. Relax and have fun!

It's just a generation gap that has somehow survived; some people for some stupid reason think sitting in front of their TV watching some show is OK, but playing a game somehow isn't.

Interesting, the whole generational gap does explain a lot of why some older people don't seem to understand video games at all.

It's definitely a generational issue, when I was in high school it was television and grunge music that were complete wastes of time, when my parents were in school it was rock and roll and short skirts. Most members of every generation find something new that they don't understand about the generation coming up behind it and brand it a complete waste of time or something that's going to ruin the world. Don't stress about it.

She simply doesn't get it, and that doesn't matter. It is one person's opinion.
Any hobby that doesn't hurt anyone is a good thing to have.

I found this interesting quote by Douglas Adams that really seems to describe this situation well.
"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies. Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just part of the way the world works. Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things."
What do you think?

Your teacher is limited and bound by her own perceptions she errantly thinks are superior. People who think they have the right to approve or disapprove of others ad what they do lack fundamental maturity and are stuck in the Parent phase of transactional analysis.

Allow your inner child to be free of others who wish to enforce their perceived parental "rights"......and realise they are more stuck than any of us. And blithely unaware of their own stupidity and lack of insight.

Go you!

I am NOT a gamer. I am hardly a pooter person. I don;t own a cell phone. They scare me. hehe. Give me paper, crayons, scissors and stuff and I will decorate a room for you tho! =D
