How to seek official diagnosis?
I'm still slightly on the fence about my self diagnosis, there are small events that happen that will make me question it, but mostly I think I have it.
I'm going to be leaving high school soon, and I've gotten this far without any help for AS (although I did receive treatment for ADHD and that does have some overlap), so I don't know how much help an official diagnosis would be in college. Mostly I would like it for myself, to end the back and forth in my head on the subject that has been messing up my life recently.
Does anyone have any advice on the official clinical route I would need to find out once and for all? We have an HMO healthcare plan, and I would need to operate under some secrecy because last time I brought it up to my parents I received a lot of anger and they were really against the idea, so I would need to be able to hide what's going on until the point where the doctor has mostly made up his mind on my diagnosis but it is still 'pending'.
Thanks for any help.
If you are under 18, there is a possibility that your parents will be told anyway. Also, have you considered the ramifications of labeling. some of them are negative. You will never be able to legally purchase or use a firearm (not saying you'd want to anyway) You will be disqualified from certain careers - like the military. I'm not sure what the government security clearances are like, but I doubt you'd pass with a dx...no one knows what future actions a healthcare system or government entity might decide for individuals with a dx. I know all this sounds a bit paranoid, but with the current direction of information control and official activities by various authorities...who knows how much a dx will affect you.
Weigh these consequences of labeling against any benefits you might receive in either college or the workplace.
Oh and yeah, about employers...you might find a dx limits your career opportunities...then again, if you need a sheltered career - or special help to get through school...a dx might be helpful.
bottom line...is your place on the spectrum a disability that will get you the help you need to function, or is it simply a condition of who you are that you can cope with, with minimal assistance or on your own?
I don't really ever plan on joining the military. If anything a dx might be a plus in case they decide to start a draft. Are there any other careers where I would be barred from entering? I know there's still a lot of social stigma attached to being labeled autistic, so I would probably not tell people unless they asked or something. But would I need to divulge that information upon being hired?
