If my country defaults on its debts, I will lose access to my very expensive psychiatric medications. There is no way around it.

So, I am planning on living every day now like it's my last. Because the day I run out of medication will be my last day. I am completely non-functional when I am hallucinating, and I never want to be in that situation ever again.

How will I spend the next month? I don't know. I don't have many people to hang with. I don't have any money to travel. I have my 12-step sobriety, and I will keep holding on to that until the very end. I suppose I could take up the hobbies I always wanted to try but never got around to. Of course, I will still show up at my job every day.

I am going to very much enjoy what is likely going to be my last days.

If you don't mind my asking, what country are you in? I can fully respect your wishes to depart on your own terms, but the more I know about the legal situation as well as the root of your hallucinations, the more I can be of help. Luckily none of mine have persisted, but I've experienced my fair share of those to be sure...

I live in the United States. I work for the county I live in, but my primary source of income is SSDI, and I rely on Medicare Part D for my medications. I will lose ALL of that if the government defaults on its debt; which will leave eventually leave me being homeless and delusional, which is how I do not want to live.

I made an appointment with my therapist that is going to be a few hours from now. I am taking today off the job. I think I will spend a few hours walking around downtown. Maybe I'll see a movie. Or eat some pho. Or both. Time is running out for me rapidly.

Hm. I am on Part D too, and I keep up with the "underground" news sources, and I haven't heard anything about them yanking Part D coverage because of a default. Also, I got my SSDI check this month, but haven't heard anything about them yanking that, either. Do you have a source? You're not a military veteran, are you? Because I DO know that vet benefits are not being paid until the shutdown ends. Maybe you've mistaken the end of vet benefits for an end to YOUR NON-MIL benefits? I'd like to see a source for this that ias NOT somebody's blog.

I don't see how any government, however badly run or corrupt, can simply shut down. I've never heard of it in my life that a government can actually grind to a halt and stop paying social grants, benefits and pensions. I'm sure that can't be the case?

I hope you'll have better news for us but suggest you check that your SSI has indeed been paid in. After all, even if it sounds rather idealistic, a government has a duty to its citizens and a constitution and Bill of Rights to uphold.

Why is the US trying to shoot itself in the foot? There appears to a great amount of polarization there and it's not good for it's citizens that politics should take precedence over duty.

The government isn't actually shut down; it's still providing a lot of services, it's just like sort of running on a skeleton crew.

I doubt the government will default; but with these continental debt limit increases, we (younger) people will pay for it in the future. I learned in my own life, you can only get so much credit, and then you have to pay it back.

I think there's a lot of disinformation where news coverage on this topic is concerned. I can understand of course why this might seem a scary situation, but I don't think viewing it this way will help you make the most of your time no matter what happens. If you still must, then go about living as if there's no tomorrow, but at the very least don't rush yourself!

I asked about this on a survivalist board, in the financial forum where many people are knowledgeable about this stuff, and they all agreed that if there is a technical "default", that it won't last long, and the panic will spur congressional action. They said that it is very unlikely that ALL SS and Medicare payments would suddenly vanish. The media is doing scare tactics to benefit Obama. It's definitely not worth killing yourself over.

Lesson learned out of this - turn the computer off during the moments when I am having an emotional meltdown. This is rather embarrassing for me.

Hi Len, don't worry about it any more, we all have our meltdown moments.

I'm glad you're feeling better and hope your place is starting to look cleaner now!

My little cabin / flatlet looks like a tornado blew stuff around but from time to time I take everything and put it neatly away, as it starts to bother me.
