Today I deleted my account. I'll be happy when the 14-day grace period is over.

My initial reaction was a bit of sadness, but then I reminded myself that all of the content I had on my page is on my computer. Compared to everyone else, I had very little on my page anyway.

I gave a few people my contact info so hopefully I won't lose touch with them. If I do, then they aren't RL friends anyway - they are only interested in being FB friends.

Having said that, I know I WILL lose contact with many overseas friends back home in Japan and Korea, but you know, I asked myself how often we kept in touch anyway. Reading each others' timelines isn't really "keeping in touch". I was able to honestly admit that we rarely ever send messages to each other, and most people I know are too busy with their lives to comment much on anyone's posts anyway.

SO I did it! Freedom from the social media monster! People are so convinced that we NEED to have social media, but I don't agree. I didn't have it until two years ago and I'll be happy to have COMPLETE PRIVACY AGAIN!

No more reading everyone's self-promoting drivel!

/dance

On a more serious note, social media really aggravates my ADD. I would scroll through the feed for no reason at all, just because my brain was speeding along. I honestly had no interest whatsoever in what anyone was posting. It became an unconscious habit; a nervous habit to indulge my racing brain.

I have other complicated feelings about it, too. Despite FB's complete lack of actual utility (for me personally), I was still scared to delete it! I was thinking, "What if I regret it?" Those thoughts mean that at some level I was addicted to it, or at least convinced by other people that I needed to have a page! Rubbish! Rubbish, I tell you! LIES - all of it! XD

I had to get all that off my chest.

/deep breath

It's so sad that this is a big deal. Tomorrow it will be like a distant memory, though. :D

You know you can temporarily deactivate your FB account for awhile if you get tired of it? You're only visible to people on your friend-list but without a profile photo, and they obviously can't view your page again until you reactivate it. It's funny how most people seem to think in extreme terms about it whereas they either have to use FB constantly, or permanently delete the account altogether.

My Facebook page has been deactivated for the past several months by the way.

I have a Facebook account, but honestly I don't think I actually ever use it.

Only times I can remember is playing that one Tetris game, or figuring out how to send friend requests again so I can stare at the pictures on my girlfriend's page all day <3

Good for you. :)

I used to have an account, which I only ever used for "liking" worthy causes, if doing so would be beneficial to them, and to take advantage of offers from online games such as "Like us, and you'll unlock ten new levels for free".

However, I deleted my account after discovering that truly disgusting, offensive content posted about Autistic people was not deleted even after it'd been reported.

Congratulations. And contrary to popular opinion, closing your account hasn't caused you to shrivel up and die yet?

I closed my account down about a year ago. Like you, I was spending waaaay too much time scrolling through whole loads of drivel. I am a little bit OCD, so if the information was there, I had to look at, and was compelled to scroll back to read everything new since I was last online. For me, half measures just don't work.

I miss being able to easily check out photos of my family overseas (despite continued requests, they are utterly incapable of emailing me the occasional photo, even though they are always uploading to Facebook). But apart from that, I don't regret it for a second. The time I spent reading inane stuff on Facebook, I can now spend more usefully (except for when I get caught up reading stuff on WP!)

I do get strange looks from people when I tell them I'm not on Facebook, but then hey, I get strange looks from people anyway.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel. And no, I haven't shriveled up just yet! hehe

I just got back on there after a long while off. I don't talk to anyone. Sometimes occasionally someone might like something I post. Rarely do I have a conversation. I have no photos up. I am going to draw a picture of myself eventually and that is probably as far as I will go. I opened it in a fake name and then changed it to another fake name. No authentic information except the things I 'like'. I did facebook the traditional way years ago and hated it. I don't regret deleting it AT ALL. This time I don't even know any of my 'friends'. LOL. People send me friend requests occasionally and I friend them if they aren't right wingers. . Mostly I just use it to link to newspaper articles all over the world and keep abreast of the news which I really enjoy. It seems like it is good for stars and performers and people who are really good looking. Those people have tons of 'friends' (groupies). A lot of people, like my sister and most of my family, have all their freaking life history up and post new pictures of themselves practically every day. I think that is so unwise. Identity theives must love facebook. It's weird because I don't want to delete it because it has got me back interested in animal causes. One woman posted on my page I need to put up photos. She is a performer and that is why I sent her a friend request. I told her I might eventually. I don't like doing that because it makes me feel very exposed. Even back on myspace years ago I couldn't stand to have a photo up, even though it was always private and only my friends could see it. I just deleted them all eventually. Plus people photoshop them. I guess it messes with my control issues. So right now I am definitely not doing anything social on facebook. But at the same time I love the news and the causes on there. It's a mixed bag I guess. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who doesn't fit in and no one really talks to. But I am way more at peace with it than I used to be.

Facebook was pissing me off so I deleted mine today too. I've never seen so much posturing and social conniving in my life as I have on that website.

Good for you. I haven't gotten around to deleting mine, but also haven't logged in for over a year. Don't miss it at all.

I planned on deleting mine next Monday, but I might do it sooner. I no longer see the point of having a Facebook, I don't even remember the reason I got one in the first place. I can't believe I even stayed on it for over a year, I should have deleted it a long time ago.

A few days later: I deleted it yesterday, and I'm so glad I did.

Speaking of FB, the boy that stays with us - lets just call him K for short - just came in here and asked me to make him an email address and a FB account. He has two but can't remember either one. So, I made him one and showed him how to sign in on his user account and save it so he won't have to keep signing in, and I wrote all the information down for him. I guess it's like birth and death - one leaves and one arrives.

He's in there coloring and waiting on me to finish so he can get online. He can wait an hour or so, it won't kill him. I have plenty of coloring books and two huge boxes of crayons, so he has plenty to entertain him.
