Going overboard or not?

OK, last week I went to the drugstore to get my daughters throwing up medicine and I was waiting for them to finish filling the script and went next door to the junk store while I was waiting. There was a beautiful pink silk couch out front and I asked how much and he said $15 but I got him down to $10. He said he had to get rid of it that day because he couldn't leave it outside over night and there was no room inside. It's beautiful and I bought it. It looks brand new, but it's obviously 20 years old at least. It's probably somebodys grandmothers and she died and they just gave her stuff to the junk store.
Anyway, we get the couch home (this involves a couple hours, trying to fit it into my van with my oldest daughter, a group of rednecks trying to tie it down so it doesn't fall out and then eventually just calling a friend with a truck) and now that the couch is home I'm paranoid about it getting dirty. I put a sheet over it and I won't let anybody eat on it, I don't let the dogs get on it, I'm planning on buying a plastic cover for it and I'm not even one of those plastic cover old ladies (yet). I have to get some Scotchguard to spray it with, and that is reasonable, but the rest isn't. I mean, I'm acting like I paid full price for it and I also put it in the den and not the livingroom so of course it's going to get sat on!
I took the sheet off this morning and I'm nervous about it, but I gotta make myself chill over this. Whats the point of it if I don't see it or enjoy it?
Tell me I'm being stupid please. My family tells me I'm going overboard about it, but I don't always listen to them.

You're being stupid
Now that I did what you asked me to, I'd say the point of having furniture, or in fact owning stuff, is to use it and enjoy it. Couches are made for being sat on and taken naps on, not admired from a distance. And with a plastic cover on it, even that wouldn't be possible.
Silk is much harder to clean than leather-like materials though, that's for sure. But unless you plan to take the utmost care of it for the rest of your life, it *will* get dirty. It would be wise to take care of it by avoiding drinks or things with sauces and not putting feet with shoes on it and other stuff, but honestly, you do not serve the couch, the couch serves you. Just enjoy it~

If you like the couch a lot, then I don't think you're exactly being stupid. It makes sense--the fact that you bought it used means that it would be hard to replace if it does get messed up. You can't just run down to the store and buy another one, especially not for such a low price.
However, you want to be able to enjoy your couch, and you should be able to. So just go all out and force yourself to start using the couch normally, once you've put the Scotchguard on. Your feelings will eventually fade as you get used to using the couch.
If you need more motivation, here's a story: When I was in middle school, I really wanted this pair of shoes. They were kind of expensive, so my mom wouldn't buy them for me. I finally got them for my birthday, and I was so obsessed with keeping them clean and in good shape (because I knew my mom wouldn't buy me another pair if they got messed up or worn out) that I never wore them out of the house once. Last summer, I was cleaning out some stuff from the storage room, and I found that pair of shoes. They still looked brand new in the box. It was kind of sad to see because I didn't get to enjoy them at all, and they are too small now. So keep that in mind and don't let your couch become my shoes!

Thanks yall! I took the sheet off it, and I'm going to just go buy some spray on Scotchguard and let what happens, happen. I can always get another couch when that one gets torn up, which it will. We have gone through four couches in the past ten years, and that's from normal wear and tear and pets, etc. Also, none of them were new when I got them. There is always furniture on Freecycle, and the junk store has deals and my daughters friend brings stuff over that he gets that is brand new almost or really nice that people are throwing out when they move, etc. So, I need to just chill.
I'll probably feel better once the first stain happens, then I won't be so big on keeping it "perfect". Also, I may end up getting something else for in here and putting this one in my bedroom. That way I can just put clean laundry on it lol.
Aha! Now we know how such a nice looking couch ended up in the junk store. It's magical! It was obviously refusing to be sat on and dirtied even in the previous residence and this is why they didn't want it any more and whenever they tried to sell it, people would try and sit on it and the couch would eat them! Or burn them! Or growl at them!

You are no longer worthy of the title "hillbilly", if you ever were .
That said, put the plastic cover on it. Don't let anyone sit on it, and when you have company over, cover it in a sheet so that they can't see it
