Despite the fact that I'm currently working and hopefully getting myself a roof of my own soon, I find my job getting in the way of what precious little time I have with my friends before they all go back to school and/or work. How do I show someone more respect than my boss demands? I'm lost about how to show that I care about more than the contents of a few screens - as far as I can tell all I express by default is my indifference towards the outside world, when in fact I haven't interacted with it directly in years and want nothing but to return. How does one convey friendliness when he is being manipulated from a blackberry?

All I've done this year is work and more work is all I have to show for it...

Yeah, it can be really hard to strike a healthy balance between work and personal life, especially with the economy being the way it is and employers expecting people to work for longer hours and less pay. I think it can get even more challenging as you get older and your friends start having more responsibilities outside of work, as they get married, have kids, etc. I've found it helps your quality of life a lot if you can find a job that is rewarding and coworkers you get along with, since most people spend so much of their time in the workplace, but I know it's not always possible to be choosy when it comes to employment in this job market.

I work independently as a software developer, so what I'm so anxious to know is any means of showing whomever it concerns that I'm not just interested in some investor's web application, since I'm actually as unencumbered and aware as I've been in quite some time. Significantly more human than automaton. At least I know with a few more disciplines on my resume I'll be OK, if not necessarily accompanied...
