I've been told I have Aspergers by my mother, a psychiatrist agreed. My Nana believes that I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder cus of all the stuff my mums done like whenever we were going on holiday making me say good bye to my dead sister and whenever she was with a man I would be ignored and their kids would come first etc. And Nana thinks a lot of the stuff I put down to autism is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Or Abandoned Child Syndrome, something like that. Thing is how do I work it out? Any tips?

I think you should talk about it with a doctor. If you google complex post traumatic stress disorder, there are a few similarities to AS. ( lack of empathy, trouble expressing emotion and communicating) There is a lot more to an AS diagnosis though. If you have other things that are only related to AS, then maybe you should talk to a doctor.

You could have Asperger's (which you're born with) and PTSD.(which you acquire in life). I do.

Here's a basic little on-line test just to give you a sort of an idea of whether you might have Asperger's:

Asperger's Test

And then, for PTSD, this is a page that I made that describes how it feels, and maybe that could give you an idea:

PTSD description

Some behaviours happen in both PTSD and Asperger's - the difference is *why*. Supposing somebody wants to be alone. If PTSD was causing it, the reason would be fear. If Asperger's was causing it, the reason would be that they enjoy alone time.

That's a good way to put it. With Aspergers I've noticed a NEED to spend time alone just because I like being alone, I think that PTSD sufferers are more likely to be too scared to spend time with people even though they want to.

You could see a specialist though, get yourself evaluated.

Yes, I could and I did and I have a diagnosis of Asperger's and another diagnosis of PTSD.

In a previous test i did it said I'm very likely an Aspie, in this test I got 24. So Aspergers you needa be alone and PTSD you're afraid to socialise. Well socialising is pretty scary, I tend to avoid people but I do actually love it when people talk to me, probably cus it's such a rare occassion. I lie to myself and say i don't need it which is actually true but I do enjoy socialising. Odd thing is though this site has people who i find think a lot like me. It may be PTSD, I'd have to ask my social worker, organise an appointment. And on the PTSD test I got A,C,D,E and F. So I don't know. Like I said I'll arrange an appointment

You've got it right about getting a real diagnosis. To say Asperger's "needs" to be alone etc. - that was an over-simplification on my part. After all, everybody has their own personality structure underneath the whole thing.

But I'm glad you're going for expert help - keep in touch!

Thanks, I'll send my social worker an email and see if I can find something out. Thanks for all the help everybody. I greatly appreciate it. It's nice to see that people on this site are happy to help.

I think it's possible to have PTSD from having AS. If you're an adult, then you've gone through countless social situations that might have not gone well, and suffered trauma as a result. I feel like the older I get, the more I just want to stay at home.

^ Yes, I think the sensory hypersensitivity has also contributed that way to some extent for me. I say 'to some extent' because what happened to me would have traumatized anyone (who didn't also have sensory hypersensitivity).

Yeah I've been thinking I could have both too because I still interact with Aspies better than anyone and I just feel like I have it. Yet the memory blanks and all that also points to PTSD. Thanks Mum, look what you did to me. (All the trauma in my life is because of her and also no, I'm not an adult, I'm 14)

How are you doing, Zeek?

I'd have come back sooner but my computer crashed. I'm typing to you now on a 10" netbook, with keys so small only Tinkerbell could use them well.

I'm worried about you being only 14 and trying to get help. Did your social worker get back to you?

Your mother sounds like most of the time she is not to be trusted by you because she puts other people before you at your expense.n Believe me, I know the type.

I think I have PTSD. It seems like much of who I am today is because of it, like Paranoid, Schizoid, and Narcissistic Personality Disorders, agoraphobia, and possibly even what I think is Asperger's Syndrome. The lack of want of social interaction, and lack of social skills, and restricted interests and repetitive behaviors are both associated with Schizoid PD, and I've had speech and language problems forever, which is probably partly dyslexia at least. I've been introverted my whole life, but from what little I can remember from my childhood, I didn't have problems socializing and getting along with people, although I've always been pretty independent.

As far as I can remember, most of this started at the beginning of 10th grade. It wasn't something extreme like someone's death (although it was the loss of someone in my life), but because of a certain problem that existed since I was born, and eventually got so bad it traumatized me.

At times I repress the thoughts so much that I feel like it never happened, and when something reminds me of it, I get very depressed, sometimes to the point of crying.

I don't know what the point of this post was. It just makes me happier to get things out think about it and let others know. I don't want to go into too much detail in public.

I'm glad you're here - welcome!

I have General Depression, PTSD, and AS. I didn't find out about AS until I was 57yo. I see now that I should list AS first, because the lack of understanding (even by me!) and the bullying resulted from people's nasty reactions to my AS.

Today things are better, there's treatment and training. Perhaps you could try to get some?

My favorite on-line unofficial AS test is
http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php

And I maintain a website at
http://www.ptsdinfo.net

Please don't be discouraged - you'll find your path and things will improve.
