Robin Williams died of asphyxia due to hanging: Sheriff's department

This makes me so sad. That such a force should die this way. I wish I could've given him a hug.

He was bipolar, but apart from that, probably too sensitive. Yes, he should have had lots of hugs. He seemed such a loving person.

When I was growing up, and people learned my name is Robin, they said, "Robin? That's a girl's name!" I replied, "Well, what do you call Robin Williams?" This usually shut them up. In a way, I always used Robin Williams as a defense to these ignorant people. He's gone now but he will always be remembered.

Robin, R.I.P.

I'm on a bit of a limb here, but I think death by suicide (especially one in such a decisive manner as this) is a demonstration of how dangerous depression is. It is as insidious as cancer. It gets a hold and spreads and eats you alive.

I have expressed this view to some people IRL and they disagree. One friend in particular says that this was a decision because life had no more to offer. I disagreed.

I am not sure why I can't get this off my mind.

Robin Williams Did Not Die From Suicide
Uncategorized

by Tom Clempson

Robin Williams didn?t die form suicide. I only just heard the sad, sad news of Robin Williams?s death. My wife sent me a message to tell me he had died, and, when I asked her what he died from, she told me something that nobody in the news seems to be talking about.

When people die from cancer, their cause of death can be various horrible things ? seizure, stroke, pneumonia ? and when someone dies after battling cancer, and people ask ?How did they die??, you never hear anyone say ?pulmonary embolism?, the answer is always ?cancer?. A Pulmonary Embolism can be the final cause of death with some cancers, but when a friend of mine died from cancer, he died from cancer. That was it. And when I asked my wife what Robin Williams died from, she, very wisely, replied ?Depression?.

The word ?suicide? gives many people the impression that ?it was his own decision,? or ?he chose to die, whereas most people with cancer fight to live.? And, because Depression is still such a misunderstood condition, you can hardly blame people for not really understanding. Just a quick search on Twitter will show how many people have little sympathy for those who commit suicide?

Robin Williams dieing is sad but it was his choice What about the 1000′s of children dieing in Palestine that dont want to die thats sad too ? TerryCrosbie (@Terry_Crosbie) August 12, 2014

But, just as a Pulmonary Embolism is a fatal symptom of cancer, suicide is a fatal symptom of Depression. Depression is an illness, not a choice of lifestyle. You can?t just ?cheer up? with depression, just as you can?t choose not to have cancer. When someone commits suicide as a result of Depression, they die from Depression ? an illness that kills millions each year. It is hard to know exactly how many people actually die from Depression each year because the figures and statistics only seem to show how many people die from ?suicide? each year (and you don?t necessarily have to suffer Depression to commit suicide, it?s usually just implied). But considering that one person commits suicide every 14 minutes in the US alone, we clearly need to do more to battle this illness, and the stigmas that continue to surround it. Perhaps Depression might lose some its ?it was his own fault? stigma, if we start focussing on the illness, rather than the symptom. Robin Williams didn?t die from suicide. He died from Depression*. It wasn?t his choice to suffer that.

Well said.

He had *manic* depression, also known as bipolar. I read one story where he sat down to give an interview about one of his movies, and immediately he launched into a disjointed rant about everything EXCEPT the movie. That's the mania. He kept the depression well hidden. He probably refused treatment, too, likely thinking that it would destroy his talent/personality. There comes a time when the burden simply gets to be too much. When the alcohol and cocaine stop working, there remains only one escape.

unfortunately, where he was at, a proffered hug would be akin to an aspirin for cancer. he was at a point where intervention was required but not forthcoming.

After reading up on his situation and what people expressed about his frame of mind I can see why he did it. There were many factors and it was a long time developing. It is a shame that he was not able to find a way to a more relaxed and less stressful place in his later years. The entertainment business is pretty hard. By all accounts he was nutty of course, but also a truly good guy.

Whenever I hear of someone commuting suicide, I can't help but feel sad considering I went down that dark path myself. I feel the same way for celebrities too, but Robin Williams is the first one where I feel really distraught over. :( I guess it is the fact that he was one of the last people I'd think would do something like this and I felt he was one of the few true Hollywood role models.

Whenever I hear of someone that lled themselves, especially someone young or around my age, I always ask myself "If they had chosen life, what would they have become? Would they be a police officer keeping people safe, the person who finds the cure for cancer, a future U.S. president, or a teacher that made a difference in a child's life?" These are questions which no one will ever know. At the same time I feel relieved that I never went that far in my battle with depression.

Robin Williams without a doubt accomplished a lot in his life, but in my opinion, this shows that we can't take great people like that for granted and that depression is a serious illness that is dangerous and needs to be taken more seriously.
