How can I seem happy to others when I'm so sad on the inside? Not sure why I'm so sad. I have depression and have taken many anti depressants that have not worked. I find it hard to say much. I'm not sure what to say because I don't understand what is wrong with me or if anything is really wrong at all.

I think that depression can have many causes. For example, I often remark sarcastically that anyone who lives in this world and is NOT depressed has a problem. It seems to me that depression is a perfectly normal reaction to the state of the world we live in today. One cannot read, or watch, any news programs without finding a great deal of blatant human stupidity, ignorance, evil, etc. in almost every story. IMNSHO this is a likely cause, or at least contributor, to much of the current epidemic of depression. I say this from 69 years of personal experience.

Depression is like some hideous creature on your shoulder that you can't shake loose. There are days when I feel so low that I don' think I can face another human being and still keep up the facade ? but I find the strength most days. There are others I don't.

I get it. You wonder whether this is a real, serious condition or something you should just shake off. I've tried anti-depressants, but they didn't work that well for me, either. To be honest, I never liked the idea if being propped up by pharmaceuticals, anyway. What I found works best for me is exercise. Endorphins have amazing restorative effects on the mind.
