This can be a sensitive topic that could lead to joking but I request that you don't.

I can't stop cussing. It's terrible. Some of you will say stuff about how I should just stop doing it. I can't! It takes me a lot of energy to think about what I am saying before I say it and I burn out quickly trying to avoid saying something at an inappropriate time. When I'm stressed it just comes out. My family and all of my high school acquaintances have filthy mouths and I have picked it up and I can't turn it off for more than a few minutes. I know it's a bad habit but it is pretty deeply ingrained. Only recently have I realized what a problem it is because at college I have for the first time in my life met people who take offense to bad language and act like it makes you dumb. There are some words I didn't even realize were considered offensive until recently.

Words only have as much power as you give them. If you curse, that shouldn't change someone's opinion of you, unless they are using superficial measures to judge you. Two key words there being superficial and judge. I likely curse more often than necessary. Most people aren't bothered by it. Granted, once I'm in "the work force" I'm going to have to cut back, especially if I wind up trying to sell things to doctors, as I doubt that will work well, but still, like I said initially, they are just words.

For instance, why is it that ass is "fair game" for television, but when as*hole is said the latter half is censored? Is there really that much of a difference? Apparently in some people's minds. A lot of it is silly at best.

(Hoping that the couple words used here don't offend, they were used more to illustrate a point than anything else.)

Sounds like swearing is not only a for of stress expression, but maybe as a relief or comfort from it? I suggest finding something else to calm you down, or even removing some of the triggers for it. Keep everything on a conscious, mental level so you don't get led away with your 'instincts' in situations where you may swear.

I find it's still possible to sound polite even with speech that's littered with swearing - I reckon general agreeableness goes deeper than that, and only really touchy people would get angry at someone for swearing if they were briliant in many other ways. It's a bit high minded and self centred of them to try and stop you speaking like that, unless talking to authority I suppose. I would just think about it with people in authority maybe, find a friend you trust to work out the best times to watch or not watch language, and then explain to people, relax about it and be as considerate and humerous and encouraging and friendly as you can in other ways. That's my opinion at any rate.

Maybe... It'd be difficult to diagnose over the internet. My posts do not reflect the way I talk because I can edit them.

I keep learning that certain words aren't always acceptable. Just the other day I learned that twat can be taken with offense. I thought twat was an acceptable substitute for c**t kind of like crap is a substitute for s**t, but someone got all pissy about it. When I got to college all I knew was that f**k and s**t were words that shouldn't be used with the professors. I'm learning that there are so many other words that are also not used in polite conversation. It will be a very difficult habit to break.

I already have a well developed vocabulary. The ironic thing is I'm trying to actually remove some words from my vocabulary (at least be more selective about when I feel the need to use them) because some people take them so seriously.

On a lighter note, I found this randomly looking around on the net and it reminded me of this thread. Maybe I shouldn't become a pilot.

If you're in the haven because you're down maybe this will give you a laugh.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/07/sweari ... index.html

(CNN) -- Northwest Airlines canceled a flight with 180 passengers aboard after the pilot began cursing at passengers while the plane was being prepared for takeoff in Las Vegas on Friday, airline officials and witnesses said.

The cancellation disrupted Easter travel plans for many of the passengers.

From the moment the captain stepped aboard Flight 1190 to Detroit, passengers reported hearing him use "animated" language while talking on his cell phone, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told CNN.

"He was having a fit, swearing up a storm," a passenger on the flight said. "He was saying 'F this' and 'F that.'"

When confronted about it by passengers, the pilot became "obscene" and began cursing at the customers, she said. "He made a big disturbance."

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the local FAA flight standards office were notified, Gregor said. Police arrived on the scene, pulled the pilot aside and interviewed him.

He was not administered a field sobriety test. CNN was unable to immediately contact the police officers involved.

The FAA officials called Northwest Airlines headquarters. The airline decided to remove the pilot from the aircraft and fly him to Detroit for further questioning.

Northwest Airlines then canceled the flight, apologized for the delay and offered hotel accommodations and penalty-free re-booking on the next available flight out of Las Vegas, a spokesman for the airline said.

The airline said "a review of the matter" was being conducted and the decision to cancel the flight was made "due to reports of inappropriate language by a crew member."

Mike Fergus, an FAA spokesman, said the FAA's flight standards investigation unit was looking into the incident. According to Fergus, the FAA has the authority to send a "letter of admonition" to the pilot or, in the most extreme cases, revoke a pilot's FAA certificate, which would ground the pilot.

"I had to call and cancel two family dinners and we're stuck here an extra night," a passenger said. "We've been at the airport for six hours waiting -- it's chaos. It's Easter weekend...we want to be home."

I should show this thread to my daughter. She likes to use the 'f' word, and at home I'm okay with that, but I have to keep telling her it's not okay in public. She still does it, and I keep remonstrating her that you just can't cuss in public.
