I was a huge Star Trek fan when I was young. For some reason, the death of Spock, Bones, Scotty and even Roddenberry didn’t faze me. Probably because I was attached to the characters, not to the actor.
I remember when I saw the first movie, how disappointed I was that my favorite characters had aged so.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rocket123,
I barely recall the death of Bones ... (wonder what was going on in my life at that time?) ... but of course he is one of those I miss. As for Scotty, I met him in person, and when I told him I was Vulcan, he kissed me. He had a fine sense of humor in real life, and so of course I missed him too. As for Gene Roddenberry, his loss was more solemn to me, and maybe less personal ... likely because he was behind the scenes. And yet I realize what I owe him as the creator of Star Trek ... because when I first saw Q appear on the TV screen, one of Gene Roddenberry's created characters, it was like looking into a mirror, and because of that things make more sense. Even more sense than logical Vulcan sense.
Seeing favorite characters age can be difficult, unless you really tell yourself somehow that they are aging gracefully and doing the best they can.
