The family cat was killed on the road this morning, run over a few minutes after leaving his night time enclosure :(.
Poor kitty, while I'm not surprised that it has happened, I am gutted because I was fond of him, this is why I don't like having cats, they wander off and get run over.

I'm so sorry about your kitty. He was a beaut.

I don't know if this is feasible where you are living, but many vets recommend keeping cats entirely as indoor pets. It is undeniably true that they tend to die sooner if outdoors. In addition to that, cats can pick up both fleas and ticks, carry them indoors, and transmit to humans.

I didn't grow up this way, but as an adult I have kept indoor cats only, and they do seem to live long lives (except one I got as a stray and it turned out to have feline leukemia). If indoors only, it's necessary to provide toys and multiple hiding places or they get bored.

I love my cats.

Thank you Bea, he was beautiful, and had such a lovely temperament. I know its a build up of stress too,but the tears are flowing for a while now.
Its not possible to have indoor cats, we didn't have a pet cat for a long time, but he was dumped over the front wall into our garden as a kitten and was just a ball of fluff, so cute, we couldn't find him a home so we kept him. Usually we only have feral cats, I haven't felt attached to one like this in quite a few years.

I'm so sorry, I love cats, I'm gutted when I lose one :( Had my favourite tom-cat die suddenly a few years ago, so I get it too...

Beautiful, amazing creatures that bring so much joy in my life...

Thanks Allie and Bender.

He is the second pet to pass on within a few months.

I let myself get fond of him, and its funny how emotions cloud judgement, I started to reason why this cat wouldn't meet the same end as the childhood cats had!

Still though, we gave him a good home, fed him well, looked after his health, had him neutered, and it's not as if we went looking for a cat ignoring the risk that he might meet this end, he was not wanted as a kitten and dumped into our front garden.

That's terrible. Happened to me too.
Thankfully, there are always more cats.

I'm sorry to hear your treasured pet died. I'm sure you have many found memories of him. One of my cats died recently too so I know how it can be. I hope you remember the good times you had with him.

It's so sad and painful to lose these wonderful creatures in these brutal ways. I am very sorry to hear about your loss and the fate of your cat, Amity, these are deeply felt losses and the empathy received on WP when I was hurting like this really helped me cope through the initial phase of shock, hurt and grief. I know you are a deep feeling person with a great warmth of heart and that tends to make the bonds of affection with beloved animals even more painful when their lives end, though those are the very qualities that especially enrich the lives of animals who live with such compassionate humans. The suddenness of such losses is hard for the owner left behind, though for any living creature, perhaps the experience of sudden death is a kinder form of departure than a lingering one. I hope you have that comfort, that there was no prolonged suffering, though the pain of the loss is not diminished by such factors.

So, so sorry to hear of the loss of your cat. I had a dog that met the same fate after he escaped from the yard. Thank you for taking the cat into your home and heart when no one else wanted him. You gave him the best life possible. I hope that after the tears are gone that you will have many fond memories. (((hugs)))

Ahh thanks folks for thoughtful messages and hugs, it was really nice to read them this morning  .
I'm lucky to have a big workload atm, so I don't have to find busy-work to keep my mind occupied. I think I will buy a little outdoor plaque (the ones you can personalise) and put it where he used to lie in the sun when I was outside gardening.
