Why do I keep doing this to myself?

I know I shouldn't be joining in on fights in comments sections or even reading those black holes. I know I shouldn't go looking for trouble by visiting Tumblr. But I keep exposing myself to things that upset me. Sometimes it's by accident; watching a video and happening to scroll down to a comment thread during a slow part. But a lot of times, I seem to do it on purpose. Sometimes it's self punishment, but most of the time I can't really think of a reason why I choose to upset myself. Sorry this post is a mess.

You have all the symptoms of an affliction known as "Internetitis."

You, like perhaps myself, just spend too much time on the Internet, and not enough time talking to real people.

I used to go through periods where I would get in long involved fights with people online. Usually about climate change. I finally came to realisation that these people are not interested in a discussion, they are not open to learning. They just want to argue.

I heard a saying once as a child. "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and it annoys the pig."

I try to refrain from annoying pigs anymore. People online are rarely even looking to have a real discussion.

I still do occasionally as well, but much less. I am trying to focus on progress, not decide that I have failed because I still do it sometimes.

the_phoenix has a good point as well. The more I have going on in my life the less I do it. During the summer, I don't have time. I was out of work a couple of years ago and I spent most of my time arguing online with militant vegans (for a group that supposedly values life, they sure are willing to threaten your life or wish you would die if you disagree with them).

The thing about militant vegans is,
how many lettuce leaves have to die so they can enjoy a tasty green salad?
How many tomatoes give their lives just to end up on a vegan's plate?
So sad ... I think I'm gonna cry ... * sniff sniff * ... :cry:
Well, all this sentimentality is making me hungry ...
* pulls out a stalk of celery from a brown paper lunch bag ... *
* CRUNCH! * :twisted:

...

I find controversy interesting.

If you're saying things and they're not listening to you, there's a decent chance you're also not listening to them.

About veganism: Getting angry, yelling, arguing, debating, etc. at someone who -eats living things and doesn't think twice about it- should be an expected human reaction. These people think that people who eat meat are -needlessly killing- Eg: If someone were to talk to you about how horrible the holocaust is and you were like 'I don't get it, I kill Jews everyday', and you expected that person to treat you with respect after saying that, you -really- don't understand humans.
