Door Is Never Locked (Not My Choice)
I'm constantly anxious about the door and windows in our house being wide open. No curtains or anything. Our very nice TV and computers are just out there on display and only basic decency is keeping people from breaking in. I live in one of those small towns with disproportionately high crime rates, and there was recently a bunch of break-ins in a neighboring town. I couldn't care less if our stuff is stolen, but I'm worried about what a determined criminal would do to our dogs. And they might not stop at the living room. What if they're interested in more than just taking stuff? I had forgotten about it at college (where I always lock my door) but now that I'm home I can't sleep. I'm worried I'll go downstairs one day to see the dogs shot or let out the front door to be hit by a car. And I hate being constantly on display no matter where I go. I've complained to my mom about this (parents are divorced so I can't appeal to dad) and she just brushes it off as a non-issue because she trusts our neighbors. Apparently forgetting that she knows people who have stolen from us in the past, even going so far as to steal a freaking live rabbit! The police here respond quickly, but why go through the trouble of calling the police for a robbery that could have been prevented by basic home security measures? I have no idea what to do except maybe move out, but I don't have a stable income right now because college interferes with one job and going home from college interferes with the other.
