Sticking and committing to hobbies

Hi

I find it hard to stick hobbies/obsessions but two areas I want to commit is having a single character in world of Warcraft and exercise.

Firstly, I have been active in the world of Warcraft (wow) since 2009 and I must have have like one thousand different characters and I have considered myself an altoholic (someone who creates and plays several characters). As I get older, I feel that I must buckle down on one character to progress on. After getting bored of the game recently, I dusted off an old hunter character. Years ago, I inexplicitly started to hate this character to the point that I deleted him in favour of a new hunter of a different race. With changes to the game, the old hunter is coming into favour again because I feel he suits the class fantasy better. I also annoys me that in my years playing that I haven't committed to get stuff like mounts or achievements because I couldn't stay with one character.

On to exercise, I have done lots of weight training when I was younger and I want to get in better shape both mentally and physically. I am interested in doing boxing exercises because I hear that martial arts and combat sports are good methods for gamers to stay in shape. However I haven't even buckled down yet and started my routine because I keep putting it off. I do have the gear to do the exercises and a gym membership.

Any advice on staying committed?

You just have to force yourself really, it's about willpower. Start small and build it up, like with your exercise for example do 50 reps then the next day do an extra 50 and keep building it up and you'll find it comes a bit easier after some time of doing it. You can apply this same thing to a bunch of other stuff. You don't have to keep on top of it if you feel like crap though, on your bad days just do 50 or 100 at least.

I have the same problem. The only way I can make myself stick with something is to be forced to by committing to participate in the activity (usually exercise) with another person. I don't want to spend time with other people, but that's the only way I can do it. I have to promise someone I'll meet them at the gym every Tuesday and Friday at a specific time. It helps both of us.

Gotta have a "Why" that's greater than any excuse not to do something.

If your reason for doing something (your why) is stronger than anything else, you'll do it.

My reasons for wanting to get into better physical and mental shape have been so strong that I've been able to get myself into a very good routine in terms of diet and exercise. During good weather, I run 1-3 times a week & up to 100km/month. Year round I've been doing more than 100 push-ups every day, more than 60,000 in the last year and a half. Because my reasons for wanting to be fitter are far stronger than any depression or laziness or lack of focus or distraction etc.

The strongest force in the universe is Love. If you commit to doing something out of love for yourself, or someone else, you're far more likely to follow through and do it than for any other reason, IMO. Figure out who you love enough to get something done for, whether yourself or someone else in your life, and you'll do it.
