My therapist told me that it's common for people with Aspergers who make an attempt to lead a normal life to be mistaken as either crazy or stupid. Have any of you had any experience with this?

I post on a prominent message board, and many of the people there think I'm crazy. Most people at my place of employment also think I'm crazy, a smaller number of them think I'm stupid. People who know me personally know that this is not the case.

Have others had these kind of misperceptions about them?

I tend to keep to myself nowadays.
But, people have thought me to be 'simple' in the past. I mean, everything is either black or white, it's a simple attitude; i think it's quite zen-like.
Either that or a weirdo; i been thinking lately that i may appear to people to be more f****d up than i realise.
Not that i care

She knows what she's talking about.

I can relate thoroughly.

Oh yes. People do often think I am either stupid or crazy. Unfortunately for me, I think the latter might actually be true.

Whenever I'm outgoing and outspoken (especially in my younger years), people called me "Crazy Liz". When I'm quiet and say things only occasionally (without further elaborating or explaining my reasoning, or without people being familiar enough with me to understand the context), I'm considered stupid and taken advantage of.

Often!

People who take the time to know me usually learn I'm not.

I've had this happen a lot! It's like people just can't cope with behaviour that is 'different' or that they don't understand or are not used to.

I often get spoken to like a 5 year old by people - either that or they are rude because they don't count AS as a 'legitimate' disability.

I ask stupid questions and do crazy things on occasion, but I wouldn't be defined by them.
