I will be 38 in less than a week. When I was a child, I assumed I would be much more successful in my life than I currently am now. Years wasted on addictions, stuck on SSDI with a part-time job, afraid to be self-sufficient financially because of my reliance on expensive medications to be able to function in my life.....

Well, at least I will be surrounded with friends while I am dealing with the existential angst. I am hosting a massive party this weekend, with lots of food and lots of people willing to humiliate themselves on my Dance Dance Revolution mat in my living room. How can that possibly go wrong?

I do think that I probably should spend less time hitting the bong and more time reading books that activate my brain power, though.

You have 18 years to go before you get to be my age.

Take advantage of those years!

38 still seems kinda young to me, (granted I'm not there yet).

I also as a child possessed certain notions of how I might or should be even at this point; the thing about "success" is that it can mean so many things, depending on the standards we see or adopt.

So much is subject to change over time, sometimes even in a year or so and I think you probably still have a good deal of it, though that isn't a guarantee.

Any who, that you have plenty of friends and are able to host such a party could be considered its own form of success.

BTW forming a reading habit is definitely not a bad idea, it can take some time but it is certainly rewarding, I think.
