I just feel really low at the moment. I see my future stretch out in front of me like a dark blanket and i can't see much hope. I feel that everyone misunderstands me. I am not a bad person. I've never done anything savagely bad to anyone. Of course, everyone does good and bad things but does a bad person wake up each morning and say 'Hey, I'm a bad person, I wonder what bad thing I must do today!' I keep going off on these long walks and they don't seen to help me.
Gay people have gay icons. Black people have black icons, yet when I say someone is an autisic icon to me they'll deny vehemently that they are not. There was a documentary on Mozart a while back and a professor said 'Mozart didn't have autism. He wasn't a loner.' Yet they'll say that Michael Jackson has autism but not because they think he's an immensly talented musician (which he is) but because they think he is a freak.
People are so quick to condemn, and to be honest, I'm loosing faith in absolutely everybody. I lost faith in myself a long time ago...a long time ago...long...long

I hope you feel better really soon. I know how it feels to be in your position, and you just can't see the light at the end of the tunnel . . .

As far as Icons go, you're right, people do seem to be responding this way (about Mozart and others). I guess we just have to develop thick skins and realize that what we KNOW in our hearts is correct, and that most likely, these people do happen to be on the Autism spectrum, and they had skills that directly related to their being on the spectrum. Unfortunately, you practically have to train yourself to not feel badly about the negative comments of others -- that what's important is what YOU think.

Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time.

I hope you feel better soon.

Oddly, I was just thinking earlier today about autistic icons. Someone asked me to vote in a poll to find the greatest deaf icon, and I thought 'why don't we do something like this for autism'.

Well, people who are considered to be on the autistic spectrum (and who I think are approaching icon status) include:

Isaac Newton
Albert Einstein
Bill Gates (I know some people think badly of him, but I do really respect his entrepreneurial achievements)

And then there are more 'everyday' people who are autistic and do a lot to raise awareness, such as Kassiane Sibley, Donna Williams, Temple Grandin, Kamran Nazeer, Luke Jackson etc.

So there ARE icons out there, it's just that they don't get the acknowledgement and recognition for this that they deserve (well, either that or their achievements are recognised but thier autism is conveniently ignored.....)

I'm sorry you feel that way. I know that I do from time to time. It's a shame that peopel don't really understand AS or Autism. Now, don't lose faith in yourself. You can make in the social world as best as you can if you try. For example, what is your biggest focus? How well do you socialize? How much support do you get? Finally, have you made the effort to clarify your problem with other people, especially those closest to you?
