Whenever I look up suicide, I see "prevention methods" such as calling hotlines or checking yourself into an emergency room. I am incredibly curious about both of these...for instance what can people on the phone possibly say that no one else has heard before? "You have so much to live for"? "Find things you're good at and love in life"? Also, in regards to the emergency room, sorry if I sound callous but it can't be that serious a threat (in terms of committing suicide, not in terms of how bad the depression/suicidal thoughts are) if you want to live enough to call 911. How would that work? You call 911 and ask them to come physically stop you? I don't mean to sound like a jerk but when it gets to the point that I'm finally going to kill myself, the last thing I will EVER want to do is call people who don't know me/ask to be saved by people who don't know me. To me, calling strangers for their weak and uninvested concern (how genuine can the concern really be if they have no emotional ties to you?) is one of the loneliest things I can think of, and I can't see myself sticking around because I called a hotline/was picked up by an EMT. Does anyone have any experience with this?

i think the hotlines don't give the usual 'trying to cheer you up and be positive bs', they just listen to what you say while you work it out in your own mind using them as a catalyst for your own words/thoughts.
if I was really going to kill myself i would make sure it was done properly and in private as having the emergency services save you would be just yet another embarassing failure at something.
suicide is a desire for change and there are better ways to effect a change

The prevention hotlines are somewhat different than what you get from maybe say WP. I don't understand checking into a hospital, for one thing it's too big of a mystery. I hate talking on the phone though, I can't stand it. Given the choice between jumping in front of a car going 75MPH and talking on the phone for half an hour and risk getting picked because phone traces take ZERO time now (Police can pretty much see any call's source and destination and all the relevant information about them such as location), I would choose the car.

I emailed the Samaritans before.
They just pissed me off. Really made me feel worse. Maybe it would help an NT more than us.
Ultimately nobody can ever really help you that much, you have to help yourself.

Yeah, I'm going to agree with you to an extent.
Basically, all those people are are people who are better than me in all aspects of life.

But, they are good in serious moments.
(Not saying that I called one)

I wanted to check out a hospital but they don't show you anything unless you commit yourself.

Suicide Hotline please hold....

No, I'm only joking.

I tried calling them once, going under a pseoudonym of course, and they came up with some lame ideas. They just made me feel worse and of course, to cheer myself up, I pranked them.
