I don't know where this topic would belong so I decided to post it here.

I keep hearing my mother mentioning a "Psychoanalysis" for me. What can I expect to see happen in one? It's really bothering me thinking of what the procedure is like.

Psychoanalysis takes time but is good. I have enjoyed many sessions the important bit its to build confidence in the councillor/psychiatrist/annalist who is doing the psychoanalysis If you do not trust and feel confident with them it is a waist of time.
Building this trust takes time and psychoanalysis itself takes time and many sessions.
I have to say I have found it helpful but finding a good annalist and keeping with them long enough is quite difficult.

Interesting, I've never really heard of this. Then again, all of the time I've spent with phsychologists/phsychiatrists was in the army... There were limits to what kind of services I could get.

Agreed whole heartly with iceb. I found that I was much more comfortable at first with discussions with a female That isn't much of an option for me, but the local VA has one now, but for me to switch at this point would not be a good idea. They didn't until I went on a rampage.

I agree with this, but I would add that if you have AS / HFA etc. it is important to get an therapist who has a good understanding of ASDs and who has experience of working with people on the spectrum.

I have had some psychoanalysis that didn't really help because the therapist kept trying to get me to think in an NT way and just got angry when I didn't understand what she was talking about.

I then found a really good psychologist who had a thorough understanding of AS and he was great. So this might be something to inquire about.

It has been really helpful for me to talk to a psychologist on a regular basis. It has
given me a place where I can talk about whatever I need to talk about in a safe environment.
In the process, my self-concept has changed significantly -- I think in a good way --
so that I have a somewhat more realistic view about myself.
