So there where cats I lived with when at my moms house, and one of them has gone missing. My mom, her boyfriend and my youngest brother are moving and have been packing...and the cat hasn't been seen for a few days now. I've gone over to try and look for him and had them leave some food and water out in case he's lurking around even put a box out. But still no sign of him.

I am worried about if something might have happened, like if he was killed by a wild animal...but not ready to believe that, since they are packing and all the stuff getting boxed up and moved might have stressed him out, so I think he may have intentionally ran away due to that. In which case I don't know the likely-hood of him returning...at least before they move. He gets along with the other cats but still that may not have been enough comfort with so much changes going on with the packing. He does have one of those microchips and according to some sites I have looked at sometimes cats turn up quite a while after they've been missing.

Either way its been bothering me.

I so hope he is back soon and safe and sound. When my cats have gone awol, the most effective thing has been to call their name outside about 2am when everything else is quiet. They have acute hearing and sound travels more clearly at that time. Mine arrived home within 30 minutes of doing this and I hope you have the same success. Another thing you can do is to take some clothing of yours you have recently worn and not yet washed and hang it outside near to the house the cat lives at, preferably where it can pick up a bit of breeze - cats can pick up the smell to navigate their way home by it. Even better, try both strategies at once.

All the best for a speedy resolution to this. It's very distressing when animals go missing.

I hope the cat comes back. The trouble with leaving food out is that it can come during the night, eat and be gone again before anyone is up. The chip is good but the details must be current so it's worth checking that they get updated when your parents move. Also if the cat hasn't shown when your parents leave, leave a note explaining the situation and contact details for the people who move in. Hopefully it will sorted before then.

I am a cat nut forever and ever, and wanted to suggest another possibility. It may be worth checking the boxes. Cats love boxes, and some of them have been known to get themselves packed up when their owners are moving. Most of these stories end happily with the kitties meowing and the owners finding them, but not all kitties will call for help. (Most of those stories still end happily.)

I have a tortie who absolutely won't call for help, and loves to bust my chops by running into my walk-in closets unobserved while I am working in them. I never leave the house without counting noses, and if I can't find hers, I check the closets.

Check the boxes. You can gently rock them and see if that provokes motion or mewing.

Well unfortunately I don't live there so it would be a bit hard to call for him at 2 am, perhaps I can see if my moms boyfriend who's staying there at the moment while they pack can do that. I know he has been walking around looking some and calling for him...but not sure if he's tried in the early hours of morning.

Yeah I thought of that, but even if he didn't stick around figured if he was lurking he'd at least get something to eat and drink. Also my moms boyfriend checked on the chip and the info is up to date with his and my moms phone numbers and such, also I think they'll be in contact with whoever moves in so they'll be able to let them know if they see him.

Still no sign of the cat, if he doesn't turn up then that the third death this year. I just hung out with a rather close friend a few months ago...he died days after I last saw him, some days I still can't believe that he'll never randomly turn up among people I know again. He was long-term homeless and traveled by train hopping...and he died train hopping. He joked one time about killing himself if me and my boyfriend broke up because he thought we were a good couple(maybe not the best humor, but if you knew the guy he that was just kind of his sense of humour. Then an acquaintance who was better friends with my dad and brother but still someone I was fond of died in a car accident.

This is good advice. I did the same thing except I had to call for like 2 weeks and then I gave up and my cat came back like 3 weeks later. I think she was taken into somebodies home and couldn't get out for awhile. You'd be surprised how it looks hopeless but then they just turn up.

Well trying not to get my hopes up too much, but I found an ad on craigslist posted a while ago, of a found cat that looks just like him from the picture...so maybe, but was also found pretty far from my moms house so may not be. But I will contact my mom or her boyfriend tomorrow to send them the ad so they can email the person...maybe check it out with them if possible.

It's possible somebody found the cat on the side of the road and put him/her in their car and took them home. Does the ad say where the cat was found, or just have the location of where the person lives?

I'm very sorry to hear about your missing cat. Being the cat got out while moving, and they are very good at surviving...for a while anyway, I would not be surprised if your cat is still around. They typically stay within their territory. It might be worth your while to spend a few nights there to look for him/her, or set a cat trap if you can check it twice daily or if you can have a neighbor do so.

My father's cat escaped during a brush fire that burnt down the neighborhood. I convinced him to get a trap from the animal shelter and bait it with tuna and check it twice a day. He did that for 2.5 weeks and his cat eventually showed up in it.

I know from my experience and others' that runaway cats usually do show up after days, weeks, or even months. But they'll show up at the old address, and you wrote about packing and moving. Should go back to the same old address every day and stay as long as you can.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about that. I know how horrible and scary it is. Cats can outrun many wild animals and can climb.
