Why are doctors so clueless? I tried psych meds which appeared to be linked to the cancer I got resulting in chemo therapy. I then got off the psych meds and feel better than ever. I am passionate about writing my book, my songs, and getting involved with helping to understand that autism IS A GIFT! Not a disability but a different way of thinking. Sure we feel disabled because this society is not built for those that think in pictures and have unique sensory needs.

My passion makes it hard to sleep sometimes, so a doctor suggested benedryl after I said no to prescription meds.

The benodryl I took last night screwed up my sensory processing so it felt like I was being electrocuted in a sense. A doctor that will give me a bill for his services. Shouldn't they have a clue or am I just that unique?

The psychiatric dominant paradigm is one of pathology, and few of them seem to understand nuances beyond that. Also there is the financial incentives that psychiatrists in some countries receive from drug companies. This can include, payment for every prescription made.

Psychologists generally seem to have a better understanding (though far from perfect) of AS as nuanced and variable, as a mixture of advantage and disadvantage. Though there are some who still impose their own subjective experience of one AS person they have known upon the entire spectrum, according to many reports here over the years. Others seem to have a good understanding, but how is anyone to know who the goodies are. It's just the luck of the draw in most cases. Many seem to know no more than what they have read on the net. And that particular group know less than us...

Benedryl is so harmless it is sold over the counter and given to children. There is no reason your doctor should have known ahead of time that you would have an idiosyncratic reaction to it.

Omg psych meds can give you cancer??? Im taking something for psychosis I hope it doesnt give me cancer. Couldnt tell you the name of it, I always forget what its called. Its in injection form.

Have you tried passion flower? You can get it in tea form. I take it to sleep better and calm my nerves. It might be a good alternative to benedryl.

You are just that unique.

Doctors have a clue as they've managed to complete medical school. But medical school can't teach every doctor about every unique person. They're taught all the basics that cover almost everyone, but it's impossible for a doctor to know that you may have some strange sensory side effect as a result of taking a common, safe, OTC cough syrup/antihistamine/sleep-aid.

Countless people consume Benadryl every day for it's medicinal properties, and yours is the very first I've ever heard of having that particular adverse reaction. Heck, Benadryl is a medicine usually consumed to counter adverse reactions from other things!

You are just that unique & while it may be frustrating, you have to accept that and that doctors do the best they can for their patients based on what they know. Your doctor could not have possibly known that Benadryl might cause you some strange never before heard of reaction & thus if you're upset with your doctor, your anger is misguided. Instead, just be happy that you found out, safely, that Benadryl isn't a medicine you want to take and move on with your life.
