Yesterday a block of cheese went missing from the fridge. I found it odd that someone would take my cheese. But I shrugged it off. Today when I went downstairs to get my coffee my neighbor told me to lock my door when Im not in my room. Someone stole money from his room. There may have been other incidents I didnt ask. But this is unfortunate. I knew this was bound to happen in a big shared building. It is going to make life more difficult if I have to lock my door every time I leave the room. There will be times I dont lock the door. Like when I go to get my morning coffee or when I have my morning poo, because I might not be able to hold it long enough to lock the door and because I drink coffee in my room, I would have to keep locking and unlocking the door first thing in the morning. Since Im not gone long while getting my coffee Ill just skip locking it for that time so I dont go crazy.

My biggest fear is someone taking my tablet because I need the internet to keep me occupied during the day since I cant work. People who steal are so cruel.

I think you better lock the door every time you go out. And try not to forgot to!

I know this sucks.....but that's the way it has to be.

So you live in a dorm or some center for disabled people?

Of course, stealing stuff is wrong, but to be completely honest the easiest and safest way to fix this would be to lock the door. Even if you're in a hurry to get to the bathroom, surely you aren't in that much of a hurry often? It can't be helped sometimes if your stomach is messed up or something, but surely you'd have the time to lock the door most of the time? If you don't then at least make sure it's closed. As for your tablet, do you keep it in plain sight in your room, somewhere where anyone can see it if the door is open? If you do, then putting it out of sight might help... but I still think it'd be best to lock the door.

I know having to lock and unlock the door can be annoying; when I lived in the countryside, in the summer I just put my shoes on (sometimes not even that if I was barefoot) and walked out the door if I wanted to go out for fresh air or do some chores, so at first when I moved elsewhere it was really annoying having to get used to locking the door and taking the key with me when I went out for a walk or something. To be honest it still kinda is.

I agree with kraftiekortie on this.

You don't want to cope with this theft issue, but trying to sneak really fast to do something is not going to protect you. Lock your door. It's part of independent living.

I assume the cheese is in a communal kitchen? So there is less you can do to protect your food. But a tablet is a PRIME target of thieves because they have monetary value and are easily hidden and sold. Cell phones, ditto.

Also if someone has such low morals they are stealing from other residents, you can't be comfortable they wouldn't sneak into your room, hide, and then rape you. So, you must lock that door every time you leave - and as soon as you're back inside your room.

Is there any chance the building manager would put up a security camera in the hallways? That might help to catch this creep.

I live in a decent area of NYC. A place where I once dropped a $10 bill at 7 AM, and picked it up from the same spot at 10 PM.

I always keep all my doors locked at all times.

So make it a habit to lock the door when you leave so your stuff won't get stolen. That's pretty obvious, no?

Definitely lock your door.If you have bladder incontenence I’d suggest one of the portable potties,my neighbors had one till they got the septic tank in.They poured a bit of bleach in the container with water and there was no urine smell.Just for emergencies. Then pour the urine in a container and dump at leisure.Or an old fashioned chamber pot would work as well.
