Lately in the shared building that I live things have been sucking. Theres the guy that steals, the huge rat scampering around in the kitchen, phones not working and just now there has been a fight. I called the landlord about the phones and the rat which made me feel a little bit better. I feel like checking myself in overnight to the outpatient mental health part of the hospital. I could use a break from this place. Unfortunately Im on disability so I cant really afford to move. Everything is included here and there are people around to help if something goes wrong. But I wish I could live somwhere nicer!

You’re a nice person. You don’t deserve this stress.

You should call 902-423-8105, and tell them, especially, about the rat.

These people at that number know about the rights of tenants in Nova Scotia.

The rat thing is scary, it's also a health issue. If the landlord doesn't take care of that, call the local Health Department.

I've never had to live around rats. Mice yes, rats no. Ugh.

Stick it out for the time being. This is your first experience living independent of your parents, isn't it? (apologies if I am mistaken, my memory isn't the greatest) Use it to resolve that in future, you will have better conditions. One step at a time. Even though you are on disability, there are a range of living situations, some that you have to be on a long waiting list for. Get on such lists!

I can't comment on the overnight stay at a hospital, I'm not familiar with a program like that. What are your symptoms for which they would admit you? It would be nice... is not enough of a reason, usually.

Yes this is my first time being on my own. I think you have to be going nuts to get checked in to the mental hospital. But it would be nice if you could just go there to relax.

I dunno maybe if I had a room mate it would be good. I was on the waiting list to get into a group home but took myself off because I thought this place was better. But lately been having second thoughts. Not sure how they would get a hold of me as no one answers the phone here...

My landlord still hasnt come to get rid of the rat yet. I wonder whats taking him so long. I hope he isnt mad that I hung up on him while we were talking. He was cutting out a lot and there was dead silence after a while so I hung up.

Call the landlord again, and tell him that the phone kept on being cut off. Things like that happen sometimes.

Talk to him about the rat. Be nice about it----but be persistent. You need to get rid of that rat.

He was here yesterday but I noticed no traps were set. At least he fixed the phone but people are fed up with this rat problem.

I'm sure they are fed up.

Not many people like rats in their apartment.

What did I tell you to do if the landlord doesn't get rid of the rat? call the Health Department.

I'd make another overture to the landlord first, and ask "What steps are you planning to take to deal with the rat, and when can I expect to see it done?"
