Little news segments show up on my tablet when I have google up. I dont know how to shut this feature off. Sometimes there are interesting news articles about space and other science related subjects. Then you have the school shootings. There was another one today in Texas. I would like to know whats going on in the world. Usually I skip the murder stories. But the school shootings stand out from other murder stories because they are just kids and the fatality is so high. When this happens I get really upset. So I wonder if I should just give up on the news altogether.

Maybe one day people won't do things like that anymore. There are people called universalists who believe one day all of mankind will be free from suffering.

Until fairly recently I was a news junkie, but all of a sudden find I can no longer watch the news, especially when it's likely to feature some politician or 'expert' busybody sounding off. I'd rather play Doom and read message boards. :)

I've been much happier since cutting down on watching or reading the news. I check the headlines occasionally to make sure there isn't an impending nuclear holocaust. My rule of thumb... if all the newspapers have different headlines then nothing's happening... if all the newspapers have the same headline, then we have a problem.

I always find it's best to catch up on the stories a week or two after the event, that way the worst of the pointless speculation has died down enough to be able to filter out what might actually be factual, and if the story hasn't lasted that long, it probably wasn't worth my attention to begin with.
