We got a call from social security this morning. We do not have to go to the hearing, my husband has won the SSI benefits he has be trying to get for a couple years now. So my husband is saying I don't have to find work because also I got my benefits recertified not long ago. My caseworker thinks however especially if I get an AmeriCorps position that will not affect my benefits I need to find something to do. Just wanted to share the news.

I'm going to be honest:

I think it's better if you work. Your caseworker is right.

If it doesn't affect your benefits, why not go for it?

You can now save in case your uncle decides to pull some crap. Like he's been doing for the past couple of years.

Yeah, for sure the extra money will help. I have to wait until next week to hear back from the AmeriCorps positions.

If you are able to work, you probably should. The fact is that the longer you are out of the work force, the less likely you are to eventually re-enter it. I'm assuming that is not what you want.

I do a little bit of volunteer work at my local food bank (I'm retired and have more spare time these days).

There is a person there who works basically full time, for no pay. He is on some kind of disability, perhaps SSI. His partner also works with him there, and she also receives some form of benefits. At first I thought they were employees, considering the amount of hours they put in. I suppose if you're not concerned about earning money (or much of it), you could look into that kind of opportunity for work.

And by the way, congrats on the SSI for your husband.

Will he get a back-payment, then? That could be handy for you guys in either moving, or at least renting an apartment.

Yes, but I don't know all the factors that would impact the amount and if it's a large amount he will not get it all at once ( they split into three payments 6 months apart)
