Yesterday I broke my ankle in two places. I thought it was likely just a sprain so I didn't go to the doc right away.

Today I was in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals for a full 9 hours, getting xrayed and diagnosed. I have a really sloppy looking splint mess that does not seem very stabilizing. I'm supposed to keep the thing elevated above my heart as much as possible, meaning I guess that I'm not supposed to spend much time out of bed.

That's all that I have to say. I don't self-pity very much but I think this counts as a reasonable basis for it.

Do you have anyone who can help look after your husband while you get some rest?

Im so sorry to hear that! Can you get some sort of home care to look after the two of you?

Oh my gosh. Yes, can you get any help to care for your husband? And you have every right to feel a bit sorry for yourself in this situation.

I agree with the above.

You have to take care of yourself. Is there some opportunity for some sort of "respite" care.

You need to physically heal.

How did he happen? (if you feel like telling us)

Ouch!

I hope it starts to feel better quickly.

The main problem I see is driving - which I can't do for 6 weeks. Yes, it may be time to enlist the spouse's son to do some of these errands.

I just feel like checking myself into a nursing home or hiring a home care nurse, not really of course, can't afford it.

I just feel so frustrated, I seldom cry but I did tonight. But my daughter has offered to help out this weekend, so I'm happy about that.

It's OK to feel frustrated, even a little bit trapped, because you are, a bit, for a while. Crying is also OK at a time like this! But you'll be getting some help, and that's huge.

Different people are wired differently for dealing with adversity. I can't advise you on technique - I will say that making your rest and recovery a priority can be challenging when there are others to consider. You know that, but it probably helps to be validated :-)

I can always count on you to say something both wise and uplifting, Esmerelda Weatherwax! Thank you. I already feel better today.

That is a really rough thing to deal with. I'm sorry it happened. I hope you heal fast.

Usually they have you lift the affected limb above your heart to help stop swelling, and also to prevent blot clotting in a damaged area (it can create a blockage in your entire circulatory system), that said I highly doubt it needs to be elevated for a full six weeks, probably more like 6 days for the swelling to end. I would clarify with your doctor on that time frame (assuming they don't want to charge you 100$ just for a phone call).

Anyways best wishes for a speedy recovery and I hope your daughter and step-son pitch in and help.

The presence of your daughter will certainly help.

I hope you indulge in what you fancy.

Thanks for the well wishes, everybody. I'm starting to feel a bit less scattered mentally. The bones still hurt, but that must be why they sent me home with some oxycodone!

:D :) :D :) :D

How frustrating. Like you don’t have enough on your plate already. Glad the kids are helping out.

So sorry to hear you have a broken ankle. How frustrating and painful. The day spent in getting xrayed, splinted, and whatever with the doctors would have been almost as bad as the break, for me. I hope the various adult children pitch in and that you can relax and let them help.
