I've been having a really rough time lately and today I had a psychatrist appointment. I didn't like it at all. I brought up autism and she says "it doesn't matter if you have autism or not". She refused to change my meds. When I said taking care of my uncle's many animals was depressing me she said "take them to the pound". When I mentioned wanting a job she said "call McDonald's" she thinks the only thing that will help me is DBT.

Sounds like your psychiatrist has too many patients.

These are the utterances of somebody who is "burned out."

This is the way it seems to me, based on what you wrote.

^^ I'd agree with Kraftie but I'm going to be more blunt:

this woman has no business being responsible for *anyone* . And she certainly should not be in charge of your medications, Angnix. Doesn't matter what is going on with her or in her life, she has no business taking it out on her clients.

can you find someone else? (I know that can be tricky, but if this lady claims to be qualified to work with autistic adults, she's *not*.)

From my experiences with the system, patients have a RIGHT to complain to the administrator, but it is first better to read ALL of their rules within their own guide-books/manuals/etc., that staff are required to follow.

The «rights» or «guide-lines» hand-books should not be too terribly long (less than 30 pages typically). The «administrator» of the psychiatrist's institution has the «authority» to command their psychiatrist to follow specific rules or orders based on whatever type of complaints have been received by a patient.

More effective when specific, such as time, date, what was said, how the «doctor» reacted/interacted/responded, why it seems/felt unfair, etc. Also, I would do some research behind whichever drug is currently prescribed, because it is not difficult to find plenty of evidence of lawsuits that have been filed against many of these drug-companies (they often number in the THOUSANDS by the way). Also, regarding one's RIGHTS, concerning drugs, I quote as follows...

«Prisoners have a liberty interest in being free from being forcibly medicated with psychotropic drugs.»
Closs v. Weber, 2001, 238 F.3d 1018.

One should be able to get copies of «Patient Rights Hand-Books» from the front-desk secretaries of any institution/hospital that employs doctors/psychiatrists/etc. Last time I did such things, writing directly to the administrator(s), even their whole entire legal-department had to get involved and did NOT want to offend me.

Wow. That’s pretty unhelpful, to say the least. Is she always like that?

Too doctrinaire and dismissive. I'm sorry you went seeking help and got a (figurative) kick in the teeth instead.

Those responses sound like the responses I might get from my mom if I were to go to her about something. She's one of the reasons I moved from Louisiana to Vermont to be with my girlfriend. Anyways... I really think you should try & find a new psych or see a regular doc, like your GP if you have one. I've had much better luck researching psych meds myself & getting my GP to prescribe them than the 5 years I was seeing a psychiatrist. I'm sure the meds my psych put me on helped hold me together while I made changes in my life but I know myself & what has & hasn't worked & what issues I had better than she did.

I think you should find a better psychistrist.

Wow, I am so sorry she acts this way.

By the way, why do you have to take the medications she put you on? Why not just throw them away?

From my experience, I've found it to be important to find healthcare providers that have a decent understanding of ASD, otherwise you're wasting your time, as they'll just see things through the lens of whatever they specialize in while ignoring how ASD could possibly be the cause of certain issues that you may be dealing with. The sad thing is, a lot of us might have bad insurance that limits what healthcare providers we have to choose from.

"Providers that have a decent understanding of ASD" might be a pipe dream, especially in areas that are lucky to have any doctors/psychiatrists at all. A not-bad second choice is providers with an open mind, who will learn about autism from you if you can express yourself properly, or possibly from an article or website if you don't think you can do it on your own.

I try to stay away from psychiatrists, they are so cold & robotic. They are just pill pushers anyway.

A psychologist is what you are looking for, someone more talk oriented.

for me the pills help and the talk does nothing

my psychiatrist told me to write a list of everything I regret doing over the last year to discuss on New Years. Luckily for me I had asked for a rescrip every appt we'd had up till then, so I didn't need to speak to him for a year.

now I don't make appts, I just make phone-calls when the pills run out - much better and cheaper.

What works for you is what works for you, keep changing until you arrive a life you can call peaceful. This doctor has their name on a diploma but they are worthless.
