so, 1 of my life philosophies is: "the world doesn't owe you anything, you owe it to yourself". is this a good mindset to have? I would love to hear your opinions & thoughts about it :D

Sounds good to me.

Getting things for oneself - as opposed to being given them - builds a strong ego, a sense of self-sufficiency.

However, we must also take pains not to be too extreme about it. "I'm not accepting government health care, if I can't afford to buy insurance on my own, I deserve to die" is being too extreme.

The extreme is kind of the philosophy my girlfriend has. Like me she's disabled & on benefits but feels like society & the world would be better off if she was dead because she cant handle being a productive member of society. I do my best to try & support her & encourage her but I'm kind of lost as to what to do.

It's fine to have that kind of self motivating attitude, the problem is when people use it to beat down on and exploit other people and unfortunately that now seems to be the culture we live in. The natural world provided for all, nothing really belongs to anybody. If there was a revolution, a stupid piece of paper that says you own your property isn't going to count for anything.
