******** insomnia!! !! !
I can't stand this any more!! !
For about 2-3 weeks I sleep really well every night, then all of a sudden I have a couple of weeks where I am just wide awake every night, even though my lifestyle or routine hasn't changed or anything. It's like my body is on a cycle.
At the moment I'm going through the "insomnic week" where I'm wide awake at night, and if I do fall asleep it's only for about an hour. The only time I'm really tired is in the morning when it's time to get up. That's when I could sleep for hours.
It's making me irritable, depressed and unfocused during the day. An afternoon nap often helps before going to my (evening) job. Yes, it's easy to sleep in the afternoon. It's like I need it or I won't focus properly at work.
When I go through these bouts of insomnia, nothing seems to make me sleep (except for daylight ). At the weekend I took a sedative, and these sedative pills usually knock me out cold - but even they didn't work! And if they didn't work then the insomnia must be bad. I know it will pass in about a week or two but it's still frustrating.

I have been struggling with insomnia for about 15 years. In that time I have taken dozens of different drugs for it. Sleep deprivation is torture. I went 3.5 years at one point waking up 8 to 15 times a night getting 30 minutes of fractured sleep a night. It's not anywhere as bad anymore once I came up with an effective treatment plan, I was definitely depressed and irritable then so I know what your talking about.
You may have built a tolerance the sedative, especially if it's a benzodiazepine.you could try hydroxyzine from your doctor. You may have a delayed sleep cycle syndrome.
