Of course I got in trouble for disturbing the neighbors when I did it but it was worth it because I AM disturbed. Smashing all those ceramic cups was so satisfying. The way they'd break into a dozen pieces when I slammed them against the floor. It made me feel a lot less helpless and pathetic. I don't even mind that I accidentally hit my foot really hard with one of the cups and it left a huge, ugly bruise. I like getting bruises, ever since I was a kid. Bruises are the best because it's like self-cutting but without the cutting part so there's no risk of infection or scarring. Massaging them feels really good and it's neat watching them change different colors as they heal. :mrgreen:

If I could I would buy more cheap ceramic mugs just to smash them when I have a meltdown, if there was a way or a place to do it without disturbing anyone.

Yes, I am insane.

Sounds like it could be cathartic, please just be careful so you don't hurt yourself next time.

I've had that desire since as a teenager I smashed glass bottles against a wall, recently discovered that walloping a totem tennis ball (swingball) with a racket had the same cathartic effect, maybe its even better because its unlimited.

poor dishes and cups, they never hurt anybody! :cry: when i was in the army and needed to vent my hatred of the brassholes on top of me, i'd go tearing up the running course, and imagine the faces of the brassholes on the soles of my running shoes as i ground them hard into the cinders. :twisted: in any case, i hope the OP is able to get useful emotional release out of doing their fave thing. :bounce:

Well, I suppose that's okay as long as the dishes are yours and you don't hurt yourself. But when it comes to bruising, I'd recommend avoiding getting bruised by dishes 'cause they might break and cut you. And as you said, that's not fun.

When I saw the subject line, I was immediately reminded of the Unexpected Party scene from the Hobbit (1977) by Rankin-Bass.

On the day of the unexpected party in Bilbo Baggins' home the 13 dwarves and Gandalf arrived at tea time.  After they were fed, Bilbo began to clear away the plates and glasses but when Thorin declared, "Now to clear up!" all of the other dwarves jumped up, piled all the dishes most precariously, and carried them into the kitchen.  Bilbo nearly squeaked with fright, believing that his dishes might be ruined.  The amused dwarves sang this song that described all of the kitchen horrors that seemed about to happen, but of course none of them did.

Lyrics:

Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates—
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you’ve finished if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!

Be careful. I will once threw a China cup at a tiled wall and a small shard flew at my face and cut me an inch away from my eye.

I have never throw crockery again. It could very easily have hit my eye.

I could maybe like doing it on purpose. I didn't like it when it was an accident, because it was unexpected and I had to take the time to clean it up. Then, I worried one of the kids would step on a shard and get cut. But, if I had a designated area that I could just wing something into when I became frustrated, that could be very satisfying. :D

Dear Lost on Earth - hehe! You aren’t from Greece by any chance? I went to a Hen do once at The Greek Taverna in Brisbane, Australia. Best night EVER! I’m one of those restrained, calm, cool & collected folk, but it’s tradition for plate smashing with Greek celebratory events. Though I’m not Greek, the dancing and plate smashing was VERY fun and therapeutic! I can tell you :lol:!

Back some 15 or so years ago when the first girlfriend stopped all contact without warning, and many weeks later as I was almost a little suicidal and very frustrated I threw my phone onto the floor with great force. I don't often treat anything like this but back then I didn't care about myself or anything I owned, as I had assumed I had done some terrible thing and she was upset with me. (Later found out she had been dating others behind my back but I didn't know that then so I was blaming myself).
It was one of those early little Nokia phones that had a little greenly lit screen. The phone bounced back straight back into my hand! Intregued I did it again and straight back up into my hand! It was a smooth hard concrete floor and the phone had hardly a scratch on it! I actually did it three times and each time it bounced back into my hand! I could not get balls to bounce back quite like that!! ! I was amazed!

I know someone who likes breaking things too. He became a rockhound and gets to smash rocks, pry and dig. And he hikes in some pretty cool places. Kind of an artist at it - he understands how to smash/break/polish them to bring out the best in the stones.

I don't often smash things but I like restoring old damaged things to de-stress; something about destroying rust and rot and peeling paint, then bringing it back to original glory, is very therapeutic. I do this with old typewriters, radios, phonographs, that sort of thing. It's kind of calming.

For smashing things I write a lot on an old typewriter with the hammers in it and the bang-bang-bang of that is kind of soothing somehow. Writing is kind of a ritual to me.
