What's the use of a vaccine now? The ugly COVID virus has variated, so I've heard, so the vaccines won't protect us from this variation. And it's going to keep going on and on like this forever; COVID variates, new vaccine for that, vaccinate a few thousand people, COVID variates, current vaccine no longer useful, more lockdowns and controlment.

So depressing. I really thought we were actually getting somewhere and that 2021 was going to be better than 2020. Now that can't even happen. Lockdown forever more.

They actually don’t believe this “new strain” would affect the usefulness of the vaccine. More research is being done on this. I’m going to keep on top of this.

Take the vaccine, I say.

I'm just hoping they're only saying this as a scare tactic to get everyone to stay away from each other even more over the Christmas period.

I just want to see an end to this pandemic. So many people are going to be alone this Christmas, which is so sad, but when you know that things are going to improve in the foreseeable future you can be a bit more patient and just ride it out. Then you get news like this and your hopes are shattered to pieces again and you begin feeling all anxious again of the uncertainty of it all. If the vaccine does prove useless due to a variation with the virus then we're basically no further than what we were this time last year.

I just hope to God you are right.

News of a more virulent strain of COVID-19 found in the U.K. has unsettled world leaders and citizens alike, seeming to arise just as global distribution of the Pfizer vaccine is underway and Moderna’s vaccine not far behind it.

However, both Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams and President-elect Biden's pick for the position, Dr. Vivek Murthy, believe that the new strain does not pose a threat as long as Americans continue to observe basic health policies as suggested by the CDC guidelines.

Adams cautioned that the public should remember that viruses mutate "all the time," but that it does not necessarily make them more dangerous.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said a fast-moving new variant of the virus that is 70% more transmissible than existing strains appeared to be driving the rapid spread of new infections in London and southern England. But he added "there’s no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness," or that vaccines will be less effective against it.

But many countries in Europe are halting airline flights into England as a precaution. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Ireland all announced restrictions on U.K. travel less than a week before Christmas.

Fear is a big driver and fear of the unknown is even a bigger driver. As far as the effectiveness of vaccines on the new strain, I would probably bet on the vaccine winning. But time will soon tell.

The mRNA vaccines trigger antibodies that attack and/or block the spikes on each coronavirus -- the same spikes that give the entire coronavirus grouping its name.  Even the new strain from southern England will be affected.

Meanwhile, NO ONE is making their kids wear masks, and many, many men around here will NOT cover their nose with the mask!

EVERYBODY wears a mask in NYC. The exception is when they are running, and there’s no potential of being within 6 feet of a person.

Out of curiosity: are people simply smart there or are there heavy punishments for those who don't?

Quote:
The strain is also concerning because it has so many mutations - nearly two dozen - and some are on the spiky protein that the virus uses to attach to and infect cells. That spike is what current vaccines target.

"I'm worried about this, for sure," but it's too soon to know how important it ultimately will prove to be, said Dr. Ravi Gupta, who studies viruses at the University of Cambridge in England. He and other researchers posted a report of it on a website scientists use to quickly share developments, but the paper has not been formally reviewed or published in a journal.

...

The possibility that new strains will be resistant to existing vaccines are low, but not "inexistent," Dr. Moncef Slaoui, the chief science adviser for the U.S. government's vaccine distribution effort, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

"Up to now, I don't think there has been a single variant that would be resistant," he said. "This particular variant in the U.K., I think, is very unlikely to have escaped the vaccine immunity."

It’s more like people are fearful, it seems to me.

We had about 20-25 thousand deaths in March through May.

NYC was the worst place on earth for COVID for months, so it's likely just that they still remember seeing freezer trucks full of corpses and don't want to risk joining them.

Today in the news they said that the vaccine should work with the new version, too. The following is just a theory of mine, but I've heard that the new version is easier to catch, yet less deadly, so it's probably somewhat weaker and the vaccines might work even better against it... maybe?

Learning from experience, then.

People were asking why they were getting all out flu after they had had a flu jab and had become seriously ill with it and in some cases had died.
It was found that the strain of flu had altered, so when they had the flu jab, their body was fighting off this strain of flu (How the jab works), but then they had caught the new strain at the very time that their body was fighting off the old strain, and their immune system could not cope to try to fight off both strains and therefore they were getting full on flu, while those who did not have the jab would get the flu of the new strain, but their bodies were better able to cope with it because they only had that new strain to deal with.

It is the main reason why they found that the flu jabs don't always work, and some experts were saying that the effects on ones immune system if they don't "Hit" the right strain were leading the patients to have a much weakened immune system every time they had a repeat flu jab, then if they had not had one.
It is a bit of "Swings and roundabouts" in this way.

This topic headline is Fake News!

Why fear monger with lies like that? :?

It’s already been in the Actual news that the new strain spreads more easily but the vaccines are expected to still be effective against it.

As for masks, pretty much Everyone here masks up in public places as per our new laws. There are very few stupid jerk anti maskers. You Have To mask up to go inside any public building or retail store or workplace or public transit etc and, so, people are. Some a bit begrudgingly because they’re stupid jerks, but they’re still doing it. For the most part it’s all voluntary and people are kind and respectful to each other.

As for skipping Christmas together.. no mixing households At All orders extended to January 9th. *shrug* Not that big of deal to skip one holiday meal together in order to have many more that the oldest members of our families are still alive to attend. IMO.
