Is there going to be a f*****g lockdown after Christmas, yes or no???

OK I am aware that I am terrified of the virus but I'm getting my third vaccine and I am against lockdowns, as I don't think lockdowns work.

If so, why? What the f**k is it going to do? I can't believe there are some people still believing that a 2-week lockdown is going to slow the spread of the virus. Shouldn't the mandatory wearing of masks, avoiding large social gatherings and being vaccinated be slowing the spread? If no, then what is the point of getting vaccinated if it isn't making any difference? And if the vaccinations are making a difference then why a lockdown?

Pure controlment. It's going to go on like this every 2-3 months forever.

New variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......*50 years later*............new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown......new variant......get booster......lockdown.....

It's a f*****g joke.

I expect them for a long time to come. 2022,2023,2024. Time will tell.

Right, I just wish they would decide on it and get it over with. So many mixed messages right now. Where I live (Ontario, Canada) you can go to the movies if you're vaccinated, but they recently stopped serving food (including popcorn!) - how does that make any sense...

Why does everyone live in Canada on this forum? Just kidding. 8)

Yeah, lockdowns are getting boring, though I barely go out so I don't even notice most of the time anyway.

I don't believe the UK is going to have a full-throttle lockdown, actually.

I know we, in NYC, where there are over 10,000 positive cases a day, are not going to have a full lockdown. Only mask mandates and some vaccine mandates.

Here's hoping, in two weeks time, that the Omicron Variant turns out to be milder than the Delta Variant, with way fewer hospitalizations and deaths.

Throughout the whole delta variant we had no lockdowns here so I don't understand why we need one with the omicron. From what I've gathered so far, people who have had the third jab seem to be coming back negative when surrounded by people who haven't had their third jab yet but are tested positive. My aunt has only had two jabs so far and has been tested positive for covid, but her husband who has had his third jab keeps coming back negative, even though they've been sharing the same bed. And I've noticed a pattern with others I know as well. So if the vaccines are WORKING then a lockdown is not necessary at all.
The only time a lockdown was necessary was at the beginning of 2020 when the virus was new to everybody and we had no vaccines or anything.

So what the hell is Boris Johnson doing?

So far, omicron has been milder than delta, and vaccines are being updated to fight omicron. I do wonder, however, why we didn’t update for delta.

I concur that a lockdown is unlikely.

I ask myself that question every time I watch the news. Frankly I have no respect for Boris.

He's doing a brilliant job at getting the whole country to hate him - except those who believe two weeks of lockdown will slow the spread of the virus. To even begin to slow the spread of a virus you need like 6-8 months of national strict lockdown.

Then...what do we need lockdown for?

Get David Cameron back in - he hated the unemployed so much that he'd probably forbid lockdowns. Boris Johnson just sits back in his chair and is like "another 5,000 mild cases of covid? Shut the country down. I'll put the country in another billion pounds debt by handing out free money to furlough people and then make the poor even poorer later by raising their taxes to pay off the debt."

Stupid idiot.

I remember people asking my mother (sigh) if the lockdowns ever bothered me, which I thought was funny. Yeah, they didn't. Not because no one cares in my portion of this country and everyone behaved like it didn't exist (cities kinda went full Smallpox-tier though), but I'm used to being at home a lot, and I work for myself.

If I never bothered to look, I wouldn't even know SARS-CoV-2 and everything surrounding it existed.

Honestly I think if people just wore their masks we wouldn't be here. I don't know about you but I live in London and SO many don't wear masks on the tube, bus etc. I go by a lot of areas filled with people not wearing masks so I'm not surprised at the spread. Because of the variants vaccines no longer control the spread BUT can reduce hospital admissions. Projections see this going on for a few more years but once we have medication it should get easier. We only have one drug that helps so far and hopefully more are created. There was also a scandal awhile ago of people buying sunflower lanyards to pretend to be disabled so they don't wear masks. Maybe where you are people are sensible (I hope so for the sake of you, your family and your boyfriend) but where I am they're not thinking clearly. Government are also slow to update the guidelines in line with the new variants that pop up. Boris Johnson also is awful at this :|

I agree with this. If more wore masks and got vaccinated, it would probably be much better now. This cracked me up, but it may as well be real: https://www.theonion.com/pfizer-granted-emergency-use-for-pill-that-kills-you-be-1848214138.

I don't know about the UK, but here in the U.S., there are too many anti-mask and anti-vax people who think masks and vaxes are "socialist", and they voted for Trump because they think the Democrats will take their guns and won't let them say "Merry Christmas" or "Bruce Jenner" anymore.

Kind of this. It's Johnson's reluctance to keep simple measures in place that lead to people thinking the pandemic was over and behaving accordingly, thus we need more severe measures.

All the scientists are now saying that a UK lockdown is absolutely necessary. It's the politicians that don't want to do it. Johnson doesn't want the "Boris Cancels Christmas...again!" headlines, he doesn't want to rely on opposition party votes to pass the legislation or see more of his batshit cabinet and backbenchers resign over it.

Lockdowns have been repeatedly proven as successful in reducing transmissions. There's no argument about that.

It doesn't matter that Omicron may be less severe. It's orders of magnitude more transmissable which means the numbers of people requiring hospitalisation at the same time is going to be more than Delta. They may not die of it, but thousands will from the other diseases that the health service will normally be treating but can't because there aren't hospital beds for them because they're all filled with Covid patients. Yes a lockdown is a pain in the ass, yes businesses are failing. That's not as important as people dying. We've lost over 150,000 in the UK already - if that number doesn't shock you then something's wrong.
