My neighbours are having a barbecue in the communal garden outside (yes, in October...on a rainy night...) and for some reason they keep in and out the back door (the door to the apartment building). That door always slams really hard so that it shakes the whole building, and it keeps annoying me and making me jump. They don't seem to have much consideration. If that were me I'd put a small shoe or even just a piece of cardboard in the door so that it doesn't slam so hard when I open or close it, or I'll at least try to remember to close it gently especially now that it's night time (it can be closed gently, the neighbours just let it swing shut behind them because they only think of themselves).

Sometimes their barbecues go on until 2am, and I don't want to keep hearing the door slamming every 5 minutes when I'm trying to get to sleep. Even putting in earplugs won't always help because I can feel the vibration of the banging too, which is actually what's annoying me more than the sound itself. I was going to stick a note on the back door saying not to keep slamming the door but I'm not sure what type of people they are and if they can even speak English (I know they're foreign), and if they're nasty then a note might make them retaliate, if they're nice then not so much. I don't want to confront them because I don't know them very well and I'm a bit shy when it comes to confronting people I don't know.

Should I phone the landlords and complain privately? I know they're entitled to use the communal back garden but I just wish they'd stop keep slamming the door to the apartment building every time they go in or out.

Don’t be confrontational when you confront these people.

Maybe ask to borrow a pound of sugar, gently informing them that they slam the door too much. And maybe state that you like to sleep after 10 PM—usually when they legally have to control their noise.

I doubt that telling the landlord would be a good idea.

Stick a sponge on the doorframe.

We're basically strangers to each other, borrowing things from each other is not really socially acceptable when you don't know your neighbours. They're rather unfriendly and have a different way of living (they a bit like gypsies).

It's after midnight now and I can still hear them chattering right outside our bedroom window. My boyfriend says it isn't bothering him, and he's not the sort to confront people unless he's drunk, which he isn't tonight.

I hate people sometimes. I wish I was rich enough to live in a cottage surrounded by fields and no noise of inconsiderate neighbours having parties and barbecues and slamming doors all night long. These people don't actually do legitimate work, all they do is drive around all day looking for scraps to sell. They're basically one step away from living like wild animals. I don't know why they don't just live in the woods.

I agree….not a good life selling scraps.

There are people who do that here, too.

Yeah it's difficult when you live in flats. I sometimes hear doors banging and it sounds like it's coming from in my flat.

There did seem to be a lot of parties going on last night Joe. It was happening round here as well. I was woke up in the night. It sounded like a million people had all flooded out of somewhere. It was in the distance as well (I live near the town centre and a football stadium) so I don't know what all that was about. Pretty annoying.

Hold on though Joe. We've got bonfire night next weekend. My daughter said she's gonna turn the volume on the telly right up so she can't hear it.

Hope you managed to get some sleep in the end.

They're maybe just oblivious. I would write a note and tape it to the inside of the door. No one needs to know it was you.

"Please don't bang the door when you leave".

My friend lives in a block of flats and someone (maybe her) has written a note and taped it to the front door. It's about making sure the main door is pulled shut so it locks.

It's bonfire night tonight, so I'm afraid that tonight or tomorrow night or even BOTH nights will consist of barbecue and bonfire parties outside my bedroom window.

So they'll be slamming the door all night long. God I hate people, why are people so inconsiderate? I'm dreading this weekend with people's chattering, drinking, music and door-banging.

I'm in a very bad mental state right now, so these sorts of distractions are going to make me really agitated. It doesn't seem to bother my partner, so I can't say anything because he'll just say "stop whining". I've learnt that NTs only sympathize with you if they're feeling the same way you do. If they don't then you've just got to keep quiet and put up with things.

I know the feeling. My upstairs neighbors are selling their flat and I'm so worried the new people will be noisy. They've got laminate flooring throughout the flat and they haven't got good soundproof underlay and I can hear the present owners walking round when they are home. Thankfully they have another home abroad and aren't in much.

If it is annoying I could complain about the laminate. But I can't be bothered with the hassle. I'd honestly buy them soundproof underlay.

The fireworks were too much last night. I hate them. I kept having to check on my pets to make sure they were ok. They were a little scared, but I distracted then with toys and treats.

Ha - don't even get me started about my upstairs neighbour! She doesn't have barbecues or anything but she's an insomniac obsessive cleaner and is constantly moving around her apartment above us, opening drawers and squeaky cupboards and frequently vacuuming or sweeping her hardwood floors with a stiff broom.

Living in apartments can be distressing when you're noise sensitive like me, I am easily distracted by noise and spend a lot of time with earplugs in, which I don't always want, as I do like some sounds such as the wind or the rain outside or the traffic going by on the road (except for loud motorcycles).

It's a shame we're not rich enough to live in a house or a bungalow. In the UK it is very hard to rent a house if you're an average working class couple with no children. There aren't many bungalows in this area, and even if they are they seem expensive.

I swear the fireworks get louder every year. It was awful last night. Does nothing for my ptsd either.

I suppose I'll just have to grin and bare it because it will happen again tonight.

It should stop or at least taper off by Sunday night though as its school for the kids on Monday and work for everyone else.

Just hang on in there Joe and Hurtloam we'll get through this.
