I understand not everyone likes rats and some even have a fear, but I don't think there's any excuse to say nasty things about rats to me as a rat owner.

My coworker calls my rats bad words and says they need shooting and calls them nasty and so on. One time I was showing someone a picture of my rats and he came along and made shooting noises at my phone screen. I don't like that. I think it's insensitive and also offensive.

I mean, I don't like dogs much but I wouldn't say nasty things to dog lovers, as it will upset them. Especially that one of my little rats is ill. He just says such nasty things and doesn't seem to understand, or care, how it makes me feel.

And you lot say NTs have empathy. This man is definitely NT but lacks empathy - not just for my rat but for me as well. He doesn't seem to understand that he's offending me.

I don't have problem with rats. I think mice are cute. Rats are just bigger versions, not as cute, but yeah.

Cat once dragged in a baby mice once. Playing with it. I tried to save it. But it was too far gone. It went still, it's heart was beating, then it just died.

That's horrible. If a pet isn't a cat or dog people make jokes about killing them or eating them.

The amount of people who joke about making pie out of my rabbits or "if times get tough at least you can eat them." Really irritates me.

I had a boyfriend once who said that all dog owners should be put up against a wall and shot...anyway that's another story.

He probably knows that it winds you up Joe so he does it all the more. The guy sounds like a prick anyway.

He is a prick. He's very insensitive. I can imagine him being the schoolyard bully when he was young.

He's not a very nice man really. I don't think he likes animals at all.

He does literally mean it, as I can sense a sort of aggressive view he has on rats. But now he's turning it into teasing, which I can tolerate if it's just teasing. I just don't like the aggressive and insensitive disapproval towards rats.

But I think he's being very insensitive knowing my rat is ill. If a dog lover was upset because their beloved pet was ill, I would never say such awful things just because dogs aren't my favourite animals. I would comfort the person and feel for the dog. I don't like any animal suffering or dying.

Some people are just mean.

Rats are lovely little fuzzies, and make fantastic pets. I used to keep several. I wish more people understood them. I'm sure yours have a happy loving home. I hope the ill rattie feels better.

Im so sorry that your coworker is such an as*hole. If you love your pet rats then dont let some weird insensitive prick and as*hole try to make you feel bad for loving your little buddies. A pet is a pet and only the pet owner can decide how valuable their pet is regardless of their species.

Teach your rats how to cook Joe and then lets see who will have the last laugh when you're on the Gordon Ramsey show and he's out there watching you from his TV seething in envy:

I suppose it's OK for an NT to say what they like to a person who isn't in the right frame of mind for mean jokes when their beloved pet is sick. He's sick from old age, not much the vets can do for him now.

I don't like dogs but do I go around telling dog lovers to shoot their dogs when they get sick? Even if I was being playful it's still the wrong time when someone is feeling upset. It's unacceptable.

Joe90,

It sounds like this guy has absolutely no clue how it hurts and offends you, like he is trying to tease you and doesn't know how. Teasing is only funny when both parties laugh. So frustrating. I have pet gerbils and get similar comments sometimes. I don't think some people see how much we love our little animals. They can't think outside of their box where rodents are vermin.
