f*****g s**theads upstairs driving me bonkers. Sounds like they're constantly moving furniture around and stamping about. I'm fed up with living with my ears constantly having to be shielded. Even when I was away in a quiet hotel I still felt I had to put in my earplugs because I've gotten too used to it and I feel like if I don't I'm listening out for any little bang because I'm expecting it. It isn't fair. It's difficult to have compassion for a noisy family living above you when you have misophonia/noise sensitivities/on the spectrum, where I often have panic attacks and can't relax properly in my own home. I think they're going to be the death of me.
I know it works the same the other way too - they probably find it difficult to have compassion for me too, but at least they can turn a blind eye to it because it's not them who have to put up with any noise. They just live how they like out of the way in a top apartment with nobody above them, and lucky for them we don't cause them any bother, although we've very civilly made them aware of their unpleasant noise.

The worst thing about it is that, unlike most people, my ears are super sensitive to low-pitched noises overhead (not including thunder), and when I hear the pricks upstairs walking to and fro and moving stuff around it literally sets off my vertigo. It's like it hits a certain tone and my (perforated) eardrum doesn't process it properly so it causes slight dizziness. Now, this isn't normal, it's not like I'm just some inconsiderate, whiny downstairs neighbour who sits in and listens all day and complains about any little noise because I have nothing better to do. That is NOT the case at all.
So I feel that my needs ought to be met, just like their's. I really need to be housed somewhere with nobody living above me, unless it's a well sound-proof place. But my issues aren't being taken seriously, they just say "oh it's a family up there, you just have to live with the noise, you can't stop a darling little kiddie from playing, just wear earplugs and headphones if it bothers you that much". But that's what I do, and it isn't natural to literally always have to have my ears shielded every second I am home. And this is not exaggerating.

We're on the housing list now but it said it could take up to two years to find a new place. I want to move this year. I can't bear living like this any longer. I hate them upstairs, I hate them with every fibre of my body. I hate this country, too many people.

Have you told the housing list that you have ADHD/Autism so you get medical points with a supporting letter from your GP?

In the meantime have you considered renting privately, something like a flat above a shop?

I agree there are too many people in this country due to years of uncontrolled immigration.

Well the tories like people to think there are no council houses due to immigration but it was actually Thatchers government back in the 80s and the right to buy (council houses) that left the country short of places to live for tennents because they failed to replace all the council houses they sold off.

The irony is that a lot of the council houses they sold off are now being let out on the private market for far too much money so the likes of you and me and Joe90 can't even afford to private rent.

The right to buy hasn't affected the total amount of properties available. It's just there's more private and less council and the average rent is higher. If you do what Labour are proposing and build a new council house/flat for every one sold off that should help but I still think immigration has been too high since Blair got in.

Total long-term immigration was estimated at around 1.2 million in 2022, and emigration was 557,000, which means migration continues to add to the population with net migration at 606,000; most people arriving to the UK in 2022 were non-EU nationals (925,000), followed by EU (151,000) and British (88,000).

606,000 net last year

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't mean to derail your thread Joe. I hope you get things sorted one way or another.

Anyway, Joe90, I'm really sorry to hear about these a55holes living in the flat above you. I know how long you've suffered from them and I am sending positive thoughts to get rid of them as soon as possible.

We've had so many crap neighbours. One who insisted on parking outside our bedroom window and slamming the car door loudly in the middle of the night. One who insisted on parking outside our window and listening to loud podcasts at 5am (until I poured water over his car, hahaha) And many more. But eventually they all moved on, it was awful while they were there though :x

Cheers people. It helps so, so much when people understand. Maybe I am being selfish but I'm not usually selfish and when it comes to sensory issues and stress and having to constantly live with earplugs or headphones in at home it kind of makes us be selfish because we also need to look after our mental health too. And even if they didn't have a baby I still think they'd be just as noisy, because they were just as noisy before the baby was born.

But I feel like our chances of finding a new place are slim to nil. Right now we live in a private rented apartment, but we're trying to look for council. We are going to mention my ADHD and hearing sensitivities, although I don't hold out much hope, as the council aren't really going to care about that. Perhaps I'll get back in touch with the ADHD support team I've been under since being diagnosed, maybe they'll listen and help back me up.

I was listening to music with my headphones last night - and with earplugs in - but in the few seconds between song changes I could hear them banging and thumping up there and it made me want to melt down. This was 11-12 at night. We've already politely informed them about their noise, and I wrote a formal email to the landlords, but nothing has made a jot of difference. So the only option is for us to move - which may be impossible. Knowing this makes my heart sink and makes me want to either go upstairs and kick their door in or commit suicide. I am avoiding doing either, but I'm scared that one of these days I'm going to reach my limit. I've been polite and compassionate long enough but we all have our limits and can only take so much.

I just hate when they sweep their hardwood floors - which seem to be in every room. They usually start sweeping the room above the bathroom (which is also their bathroom) whenever I'm relaxing in the bath - with NC headphones on! The broom clangs against all the skirting-boards and it vibrates down the walls. They do it several times a day. It probably would be better if they just vacuumed, or mopped if there's dust. My boyfriend reckons they make these noises on purpose to piss us off, then if we complain they'll play the innocent and go "we're a family, we will make noise". How the f**k can do you compete with that?

I think they are doing it on purpose though, because when the landlord came to check my boiler the w*kers upstairs were totally silent, even though they make a noise every minute of the day.

I keep feeling depressed and anxious in case we won't be able to get anywhere else. Is that the rule in the UK now? "You must stay put unless you get enough money to afford a mortgage somewhere or you have a really really really good reason to move". Being driven to ransom by upstairs neighbour noise is probably not a golden ticket to get prioritised an upstairs apartment or bungalow or small council house.

I hate life.

I think that rule sounds exactly like what the attitude in the UK is now. 'Do exactly what the government tells you or else'
