I drove across it on my way home yesterday and with the police cars on the bridge I figured maybe there was a jumper.. turned on the radio to hear "police incident mid-span Southbound on the Alex Fraser and another police incident in Delta on Hwy-17 below the bridge."

I figured they had emergency services below just in case or something and hadn't put 2 and 2 together that the guy had jumped and that was the incident below. Just drove his truck to near the middle of the bridge in the right lane, stopped, got out and went right over the edge. I do wonder if he'd scoped it out in advance and not only checked that it was nearly the highest point but Also that it was over the highway below and not the Fraser River - like did he Know he was aiming for pavement vs. water because he was that determined to end it vs. hit the water and possibly survive? I dunno.

Saw a post from a guy who's dad witnessed it, not sure from what perspective. Still traumatizing I'm sure.

Would be nice if people didn't feel suicidal nor take action like this ever. Reminds me of the guy who survived the Golden Gate Bridge jump who said the moment he left the bridge deck all he could think was "Oh no.. what have I done?" Instant regret realizing he'd just made a permanent decision about a temporary problem.

On the flipside, kind of surprising it doesn't happen a whole lot more often than it does.. I mean, there are several bridges around here and there are definitely jumpers, some that happen quickly in the middle of the night that people never even know about. But I mean, with how much this place has changed so rapidly and so many people barely hanging on by a thread working day and night trying to keep a roof over their head and food in their kids' stomachs only to come up short, be evicted by some greedy landlord etc etc the amount of stress so many regular working people are under is absolutely incredible and it's a bit surprising that even more people aren't breaking and taking that swan dive off a bridge. Maybe they are and the media just isn't reporting it to keep others from following suit. This place has, unfortunately, become such a pressure cooker and the stress of surviving is literally too much for some people.

Anyways, don't jump off a bridge. Call your creditors and tell them to suck it, you're bankrupt and hitting the reset button. Sell your car and take a job within walking distance. Move in with your family/friend or roommates to save money. Hit the highway and relocate to anywhere easier to live. Call a hotline. Take a walk. Go for a swim. Have a workout. Go for a jog. etc. Lots of things to do besides end it when the going gets tough.

I truly feel for the friends and families of these folk and for the jumpers and other suicides who take thar rash, irrevocable step which even in non fatal instances can be life changing e g make one quadroplegic and thus making things 10 times worse.

We all need to be kinder and remember that everyone's fighting a battle we probably know nothing about.

And people have always fought battles and had stresses, but IMO, the battles and stresses people have today are much worse than people have had here for generations. Life is becoming very VERY hard for working class people to afford to just pay the bills every month, never mind have savings or retirement investments etc. Financial pressures are higher than ever, so it’s understandable that more people end up breaking.

Sure, there have been recessions and tough times to weather before.. but locally, it’s never been more expensive for everyone. It’s crazy and the pressure is driving some people crazy & suicidal if they feel they’ve failed themselves or their families for not being able to make it.

And things are about to get even harder here. Likely going to be a significant increase in jumpers and other suicides as people lose everything they worked hard for and can’t possibly pay for anymore.

So, if you’re in that boat.. just breathe. Life goes on without money or assets. Survive, then take another shot. You’ll figure out how to have shelter/food and the essentials. Maybe not luxury surroundings, but so what? Life goes on if you let it. And then maybe it gets better again, too.

I attended law school at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Ithaca is world famous for the deep gorges that dot its area, and you almost always have to cross a bridge over one of the gorges to get to the Cornell campus. Cornell has forever had a serious problem with morbidly depressed and/or stressed students deleting themselves by jumping off the bridge into the gorges. It is final; there is no surviving it. I came across the aftermath of a gorge jumper when I was there, ambulances and all. How depressed must you be to resort to such an act?

Interesting.

There’s a university campus here called SFU and it was designed by some guy that’s infamous for depressing concrete architecture designs to the point that all of his creations have high suicide rates. Kinda makes sense when you see the grey dreary campus compared to UBC’s architecture. Almost looks like a prison.

But yeah, obviously people are at the lowest of lows when they jump.
