Today at college I was ment to do an assessment on communication skills in the work place. The idea was that students be on reception for one day which includes answering phones, taking messages, greeting people face-to-face and filing paper work. The tutor will be watching me whilst I do this and marking me off whether I am compotent or not in each area of communication skills.

I had to come home early today because I was freaking out about this whole assessment and really can't answer phones properly because I stutter and i'm not very good at everything else excluding filing paper work.
I have to go back to course tomorrow and face this...but I know that I will either freak out on the desk and scare the people who I am serving, or fail the assessment. I really do not want to do this at all. :( :( :(

Any advice on how I could pass this assessment or anything to help?

If the staff know you have AS you should be able to ask to be excused from this as it would be unusually difficult and distressing for you.

Legally, people with 'impairments' are entitled to reasonable adjustments.

I wish that I had some advice for you, but I know that I would have a complete meltdown in a situation like that. It sounds like absolute torture. :(

Reminds me of a time I was working in a facility that treats individuals with substance abuse problems. I was on the counseling end of that, which was easy. One day I was asked to substitute for our secretary, a day of answering phones!! !! AAAHHH!! ! 8O It was NOT pleasant, but I forced myself through it one step at a time, one phone call at a time. I did stammer and stutter a few times, but by the end of the day I was doing alright.

I hope everything goes well. Try to see it as one small piece at a time.
