Does anyone else have this 'miserable' attitude?

I have a very scholarly attitude to school and life. I tend to think a lot of the time, "I don't see why everyone needs to be so lovey-dovey and why people need to have fun all of the time. Not everything can be fun." I have a very work-related mindset and find many opportunities to do work. I have been called by some people as boring or taking the fun away.

However, I believe that not relaxing often makes me more mature. Doe any of you?

uh.... no..

nope - it doesn't make you more mature, it makes you more "stuck up" and less likely to make friends (sorry).

At school, my best friend was like that (your words are almost exactly the same as his). I suspect he's aspie but he already has enough on his plate without that too.

As I said, we were best friends and I was always a complete looney. My craziness kept him sane.

After we left school he burnt out very quickly in the workforce. He's in his late 30s now and has had two mental breakdowns, has chronic fatigue and has schizophrenia.

Let your hair down before it's too late. Being too serious is very bad for your health.

I mean, someone who is stuck up makes fun of others for being 'lower'. I don't; I just think this in my mind because I believe that it
makes me better able to do work than most people, who quite frankly, don't seem to give a toss about their schoolwork. I believe this because at school I see most people socialising and laughing as if there's no tomorrow. I think they're badly equipped as they're not serious enough.

I don't actually say this attitude to anyone out loud but I think it to myself. I do get on well with some people although I know not to tell someone that I dislike them.

stuck up people usually don't go around insulting people. They have a similar 'smug' attitude and keep it to themselves, but people can tell when a stuck up person is secretly thinking he's somehow better.

I don't mean this as an insult to you. I have no idea whether you're actually stuck up or not but what you described could certainly be interpreted that way. Hope this helps. :?

I am actually rather happy with my attitude, but I don't make a big show of it. It enables me to get on with work and to help me do well at school. I'm saying this because when I relax TOO much, I start getting depressed about not doing any work.

If that works for you at this time, go for it. Keep in mind that you may decide on a different outlook later, so don't berate yourself if you work less at that point. And don't think that the fun and socializing are unimportant. You'll be better off on a job if you are able to get along with coworkers and do competent work than if you have the best technical skills in the company and can't communicate effectively.

The people you're observing are learning communication skills that you're not. Work on these skills now or play catch up later, your choice.

I dont think you should assume that just because people socialize or like to be lovey-dovey, they must be stupid or dont care about their work That is, unless they are drunk 24/7, talk through their classes (that's actually disrespectful to the professors) and do not seem to care at all.

My main issue with this is that it could be very bad for your health - I'm not at all criticizing you as a person.

My best friend was stopped in the middle of a suicide attempt.

We had someone at work who was very similar - I even said to him that I felt like I was talking to my best friend when talking to him. He left work after a few years citing health issues. Within a few months, he'd suicided.

Humor keeps us sane.

Not relaxing doesn't make people more mature. All it does is increase stress levels. I had this attitude when I was at school...I didn't make any friends and actually managed to make enemies. In the end, it left me stressed, lonely and depressed.
I wouldn't advise anyone to be consistantly serious...everyone needs a bit of fun in their lives.

And I do...at home. I forgot to say I do have fun in my own way independently. However, I believe that people must show total commitment at school and act like they actually do care. After all, GCSEs are very important and some people act as it they're not there.

Brittany has a point. Might want to listen to her.

Some people like to keep busy. It stops them from thinking too much. My brother in law is like that, he's basically a workaholic but it keeps him uh sane. He's in good health, always been into physical fitness too, goes for a lotta bushwalks. active active active.

I can agree with you on that one, to an extent. Well, I'd love to break the workaholic attitute but have difficulty doing so.

Ultimately, everything we do is to stimulate some kind emotion. Your philosophy on life, for example, makes you feel more mature, which makes you feel better. People who hate work just do work because they have to, so they can get food and shelter, which are on the bottom of the heirarchy of needs. So even if you are a workaholic, it is probably because work satisfies you on some level. Perhaps the work is interesting and stimulates your mind. Or perhaps you take pride in your work.
I think there is a great virtue behind hard work.
