I posted this in Greentea's thread, and then I realized that it needs a wider audience.

Well put, I agree completely.

i am not so confortable with the term 'self-esteem', because I do not feel it properly expresses the problem. It is not so much that people have a bad/poor perception of themselves, but that they have not come to terms with themself, or defined their place in the world.
