Hi,

Is anyone here non-verbal/mute? Whether by choice or other? Is there any technologies specially made for mute/non-verbal people? I can't see well enough anymore to write on a notepad, and not everyone knows ASL. So,is there some device I can get?

Links appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,
SpaceCase

I'm sure there are many technologies available, some as simple as a computer with text-to-speech capabilities, others much more complex.

I did a google search... I saw a patent for a communication device for deaf and mute people, but it doesn't seem to cover blindness...

You could use a laptop, though it would be rather overkill and quite pricey. Though if you could get your hands on one of those OLPC laptops, that would be a cheaper alternative. However it seems its not available as a consumer product, only through donation to third world countries.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

(EDIT: Perhaps I could cobble something together... watch this space.)

I am mostly non-verbal. Someday I want to become completely non-verbal. I use ASL in the tactile mode used by the Deaf-Blind. I haven't been with anyone who's comfortable with that for years. I have visual processing deficits that make it nearly impossible for me to read ASL visually or read print. I have auditory processing deficits that make it nearly impossible for me to understand speech. I hate the English language so bad that Braille would do me no good. I just want new Deaf-Blind friends and to prove that my communication needs are the same as theirs. My second cousin has a different ASD than I have. He's completely non-verbal, and he's NOT deaf. He gets free ASL interpreters. I deserve mine too! Shouldn't nobody be reminding me I'm not deaf. THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT ! !! !! !!

As for technology, I can't think of anything for the visually impaired who are non-verbal. The LightWriters all display what is typed in print and have a laptop-style keyboard. They are very expensive too - $3,500 at the cheapest. As for communication, I think you & I are in the same boat.

The OLPC project was doing a thing where $400 US got you one laptop for yourself and one for a child in a developing nation, but this seems to have ended. Too bad. By the time I decide I "really want" something, it's gone.

What is wrong with this? Type what you want to say and out comes the speech?
