I can't stop!
Everyday I'm obsessing about what university I'm going to, what program I'm going to, the residencies, the food plans, the reputation, the professers, the size of the schools, the size of the program, etc. It's interfering with my ability to concentrate (along with other anxieties), and I don't know if I'll even make it to University if this keeps up. I'll already had a number of meltdowns because of it (and other stuff too) at school!
I have three years until I have to go to University!

I do the same thing, I am totally obsessed with the idea of going to university and I think many people of our age are doing the same thing. I go to university next year as a 17 year old and I go through the application and interviewing process in a few months' time so it's virtually all I think about right now. I've had a huge number of breakdowns too and a regular basis and the thought of going to uni and achieving greatness is what keeps me going :) I'm sure you'll make it to uni, you seem perfectly able and capable

The thing is, when I talk about it, I get shot down because I'm only in grade 10/11 (it could be either one, I refuse to tell), and I'm staying in school for an extra year, so it's 2/3 years until I should be thinking about it. However, I feel that if I pick the wrong major, it's going to mess up my life (it's not logical, but that's irrational fears for you :P). I can't afford to switch majors!

My family have been asking me about university since I was 11...you're 16, it's never too early :P
At university there should be some kind of guidance counsellor or a support worker who can talk you through your worries about switching majors. Maybe you could visit the university and look at the departments of the major you wish to take. It shows initiative if you contact them at an early age, it shows them you're dedicated :)

I've already changed my major around four times and so have many people I've spoken to, so it's not uncommon to want to change them later which is why I took general college classes first so I could think about it more.

You have got three years before you plunge into your university studies...so relax! When you get closer to actually starting the
university, think of it as a new adventure and all the fun you will have besides the schoolwork.

I just had a young family relative get accepted to Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island which accepts about 400 freshmen students each year...and she is so excited to begin in the Fall, 2008. Her brother just started as a Software
Engineering student at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in the Fall, 2007. He is having so much fun as well as working hard
at his college studies...there is a Spring event called, "Dragon Day" where the Engineering and Architectural students build a
dragon and parade around campus in the month of March. You can view the "dragon" on Wikipedia by Googling, "Dragon Day"
if you want to see it. It is an annual celebration. Yet, just one example of all the fun you will have once you begin the university.

Good luck!

Since you were 11? Either you were a sort of child prodigy or your family is really fanatic (or both ofcourse).

I must admit I'd have liked a little more academic challenge when I was younger.

I disagree...it can definitely be too early. It leads to premature and unwanted stress, and I think one of the biggest problems with this educational system is that it forces people to make decisions about their future way before they're ready (or even need to).

Relax, Ebec. Worrying about this sort of thing will most likely hurt your academic performance and effect you're concentration.

Just remember that life is the competition, not how soon you get into university. Do it at your own speed or you won't do it at all. :)

hmph... I sort of feel the same way about grad school...even though it's 2/3 years away there's a lot to think about...which major, which university (stay or go?) etc...

I call tell you this, there are statistics, something like 60-70% of people end up doing something different than their major. Even at this point, when I graduate, I can go to grad school in maybe 2-3 different areas directly (and probably that would increase into 4-6 different areas if I really wanted to, and was willing to spend another year taking prereq classes)

So it's not really that big a deal to pick the "right" major...plus usually universities make it so you can switch in the first year without delaying graduation or taking extra classes, anyway.

Yeah, so, it's not really too big of a deal to be thinking of it now...just don't let it get to you...

I dont see anything wrong with it Ebec.

You could say its a fact that your thoughts have gone beyond those of people your age..

is it a bit obsessive? I think one of the AS traits is sudden obsession with items/subjects that interest us. College is obviously important to you and click-click-click you need to learn all you can about it. Nothing bad to say about that. Think about it...

in the end, when the time comes for you to start sending out those college apps.. you'll be much better informed and prepared than your classmates.

:)

Im at university, and its not so bad. I guess its a bit harder for someone with AS but im pretty sure there are a few other AS people around at uni - i wouldnt be surprised anyway. Try not to obsess over it - its not worth the worrying really. Its like school but more independant and you can basically do what the hell you want.

If it was just obsession, I wouldn't mind. I love having obsessions :D
But the anxiety that comes with it is PAINFUL. I wouldn't wish it on anybody!

My parents put me in college classes summer after my sophomore year of high school. If it would help you not agonize you might look into the same thing. If you grab a couple of credits early, it can also ease pressure. I had to withdraw one semester with mono, and the summer classes I had taken made it so I still graduated in 4 years.
