When I got officially diagnosed about a year ago, my husband remarked, " but you don't have an obsession" Well, no, I don't have any major obsession, or at least I didn't at the time. I had many interests.

The problem is, over the past year, I have developed one. It's " Asperger syndrome."

This has been a double edged sword. On the one hand, it has given me a lot of information, a lot of AHA!! moments, and access to a bunch of people who think similar to myself. However, along the way, I've managed to come across a lot of negative and hurtful stuff, and I've come to internalise and believe a lot of the worst generalisations that are made. I have come to doubt myself and believe that my life sucks and always will.

I think it's time I found a healthier obsession. Or several. Maybe I'll get into training and row for Australia (No lay- down -Sally jokes) . Maybe I'll improve my oil painting, climb Kociusko, learn to sew my own clothes, or jump out of a perfectly good plane.
I just know that for a while, I have to work on being human; a happy human: a good wife, a better than average rower and artist , perhaps, - and being an Aspie probably shouldn't even feature in the top 10 for a while.

I will probably return, but I don't think it should be for a while. Thanks to everyone who helped me. I'd like to think I helped one or two on the way. I liked the dictionary games.

See you on the flipside.
Opal - glitters with the colours of the spectrum.

-Formed from fossilised dinosaur bones :lmao:
Take care.:salut:

Yeah, I feel a bit like that already.

My life has just ground to a halt because of it. I know I need to swing through it and carry on but then on the other hand, maybe some period of adjustment is good. Maybe if I roll with this obsession until I'm as sick of it as you are now, then along the way I'll have learned a few things that can help me in the future.

One thing I've immediately noticed visiting these websites is the degree to which a lot of people, especially younger people, identify themselves first and foremost as someone with AS. My initial reaction is that this is a very "NT" imposition on us. We are all kinds of things with all kinds of skills and qualities. Over-identifying myself with someone else's label can't ever be a good thing. I never agreed with it in the past when it came to all kinds of aspects of human diversity. Why should I agree with it now when it applies to me? When it matters the most that I don't fall for all that categorization BS? We're all individual, right?

Right now, though, although I see that technically, I don't seem to be able to pull myself out of it. It's very frustrating, and totally hypocritical. I'm p*ssed off about it, but at the same time, I love it. I love to analyse things until I'm blue in the face, so this topic's got endless fuel to keep me going. It's the perfect obsession, in one sense. Because it's about ME! That's why it's so dangerous, at least from where I'm standing. Still, let's hope there's some good to come out of it.

Thanks for your post, it really helped me today.

I gess it makes us all really look at ourself and who we are, change is not easy for aspies anyway..

But your right of course we all do need to move on and since I was diagnosed last year it has consumed me, has become my life who I now am - like an extended family really.

The best advice I have had is surround yourself with like minded people and then you can allow yourself to be who you are.... so here I am again

opalgood luck, but if ever you need someone to understand, the aspie world will always be here....

Don't worry Opal,

I think I have more than a bit of an obsession with Aspergers itself too.

See you when you decide to return.
