I'm scared to death by storms, and right now there's gonna be a few heavy ones very close to me, if not - god forbid - above me...

I need some help. :( Any reassurance? I feel most vulnerable when storms are around.

Any help would be truly appreciated. Could you help just this one time? Please? :(

I'm not scared of storms myself, but i understand your fear. The feeling that you're completely at somthing's mercy can be quite terrifying. Rest assured that the building in wich you are probably sitting by now is build to resist even the fiercest of storms.
is it the thunder, the lightning, the winds or the rain you are scared of?

stay in the basement far from any windows/doors/electrical wires, turn of the power, put in earplugs, and sing a happy song. that always helps me during the big ones. i like storms but sometimes i get a little overwhelmed with the monster storms.

I personally get very excited during storms, but I'm not by all means normal. One of the most fun times of my entire life was driving in a severe thunder storm.

But I know some people fear them and that is okay. Storms can actually be quite dangerous. Stay indoors if at all possible. I would say some more things but I don't want to scare you even more. :(

But what Alaspi said is pretty much what I would have said.

Ok...counter intuitive process... find a field... with lots of tree around it... go lay down in the field...let the storm dump on you... the most glorious thing ever... hiding from your fears gives them power... face them and you have the power. Yes, I know it doesn't work with everything but sometimes it does.

Don't worry - all the people who aren't afraid of storms will take the hit for you - namely me :>

Hide, maybe under a bed, no can't do that, spiders and dust bunnies might get me, hide in the basement, no, lighting can travel though the wires into the basement and shock me, then the spiders will get me. Well just try dealing with it, storms are just part of life, you have to get over your irrational fears.

Not at all...the whole idea is to lay down in the field. The trees around will be the target of any dangerous lightning and you'll be safe as can be... well 'cept for getting mighty wet.

I'm not normally scared of storms but I was pretty scared this evening about 10:00 when I was out in the middle of Wimbledon Common in a t-shirt, no coat or anything and lightning started flashing as bright as day!

Luckily I got back to my car before the rain got heavy and only got a bit wet.

I actually like storms when I am indoors, the louder and heavier the better!

Thanks for the replies and your oppinions on storms - it's helped me a bit. :)

The storm has passed and wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be...

Passed for the moment anyway...

Thankyou all. :) I read all replies.

I kinda like storms, can be an adrenaline rush. Glad it's passed for you now though, just remember it's probably more scared of you than you are of it! No wait, that's spiders...

I love thunderstorms, the more severe the better.
Chances of being hit by lightning are miniscule. Even lower if you're indoors, since the building will usually take all of the hit.
Lying down on the ground outside during a storm near trees is NOT safe. Neither is standing up, really. There's a risk of being hit no matter what your posture outside; the safest posture (but not by a lot) is to crouch down in a ball, like a "basketball with legs".
Knowledge is power. Those afraid of storms might read up on lightning and how it really works (for example, how many people know that lightning starts from the ground and travels into the sky, not the other way around?).

My older kids were terrified of storms when they were younger. I finally figured out that it was mostly fear that the lights were going to go out unexpectedly. So, whenever we were getting a storm, we would have a "no electricity" evening. I'd cook supper, then all the lights would go out, and we'd eat by candlelight. All unnecessary electric appliances would be turned off. The evening was devoted entirely to storytelling, games, making music, and doing crafts together.

What is it about storms that makes you afraid, and how can you modify your environment to help you cope with it? We figured out what was causing the problem and worked out a creative solution. It's likely that you can, too. You know, if it's the noise and the lightning, you might make a "comfort basket" that has a favorite blanket in it that's soft and can muffle some of the sound and blot out the light. It could also include some of your favorite comfort foods to help calm you. What else would you find comforting?
