I moved yesterday, and when I got the truck, it read just over a quarter tank of gas. The contract said half a tank. I alerted the worker, and he hand-marked just over a quarter tank (close enough, I guess).

I didn't finish with the move until late at night, and I filled it up to just over a quarter tank (what it showed in the initialed amount). Today, I saw an email that stated that I had been hit with an $85 charge.

I'm pissed, and I'll be even more so if I don't get it back.

What makes it worse is the fact that the fuel gauge always drops significantly the moment you take it out of the lot. I think it's rigged.

The people are thieves. Never use them.

You're making a pronouncement like that after one bad experience? Not fair to U-Haul.

Did you ask them what the charge is about?

How would a U-Haul vehicle know when it's out of the lot? The "rigged" gas-gauge would be unuseable in any circumstance. I think this is more likely some misunderstanding between the OT and the U-Haul people. If U-Haul wanted to fleece its customers, there must be easier ways.

I guess I should explain the rigged bit.

It reads drastically different (a full 1/8 of a tank) depending on slight differences of the angle of the truck. This is very noticeable when driving it. An unlevel parking lot can cause it to read much higher in places.

Maybe that's just how the truck is designed. Seems paranoid of you to assume there's a conspiracy against you. If U-Haul were really a crooked operation, they'd be called I-Haul.

Good news: I got the money back.

But I think I'll avoid them next time.
