After years of periodic bouts of insomnia, I finally broke down and got a prescription for Ambien, at least for me it works very well. It's very cheap as a generic, and it kicks in like an anesthetic, so my over-active mind can't keep me awake. I know it sucks to think that chemicals may be the only way to get some sleep, but I think it's better than suffering on principle.

I was on something called Imovane, it seemed to work, but it leaves a metallic taste in your mouth when you wake up, does Ambien have the same effect?

Nope, but stuff does taste weird if you eat it while the pill is first kicking in. Things *can* get a little strange with Ambien if you try to fight it once it takes hold, some people sleepwalk or do other oddball things on it. Sometimes I up my dose when I really need to make sure I get to sleep, then it really does hit me like a knock out drop; I wake up in the morning with the lights still on and my book still in my hand, but refreshed, it's disconcerting but effective when I just can't seem to get to sleep.

Ambien doesn't do anything for me. Wide awake, maximum dose. Temazepam works well, but I need to to a drug holiday for a few days after being on it awhile to restore its effectiveness. If you tend to abuse drugs, this one is not for you, as it is a benzodiazepine. An old-fashioned tricyclic antidepressant, Sinequan, works well, too, but only the brand name, not the generic, doxepin. Maybe it's the filler, but I tried it again after many years, and forgot to specify the brand name, got the generic, and I was left feeling druggy, and then I remembered that was why. It's cheap, too.

I'll do almost anything for sleep. Except for a couple of years around age 13, I've never slept well, four hours at most at a time. It's crazy making. I don't have any breathing disorders, and I'm not overweight. The brain just doesn't shut down. Lack of sleep is the most stressful thing.
