One of the companies we are custmers to is Comcast, and some of them are ass holes! It took us two hours, just to get told where to get the modem number from and how to put it in my new $886 HP! THAT"S ALL! Jerks kept giving my mother the automated, bull s**t menue, and she told them our phone number over 7 times! I could here her yelling "no.... NO.. NO! no-no-nooooo! 'slams the phone to the wall'" Needless to say, after last Saturday I HATE them!

When my mother needed a breather (eventualy), I took the phone and there was this guy with an accent. A judgmental prick, imo, because he acted like he thought he was oh so smart! All I did was tell his the situation. I was useing a new HP elite computer, the lousy USB card was sitting in it, DSL is on my moms HP Pavilion. She's the account name for DSL. Imediatly.... IMEDIATLY., he told ME to calm down! How amazingly rude to tell me how to sound or feel when I don't even try that! I mean, what made that ass think he had the athority to boss me?!

*sarcsum* oooo I'm such a b***h for describing what's going on, not to mention softly! oooo.. how dare I try to get connected with one, simple, EASY problem!*end sarcasum*

All we had to do, was put in the modem number.......(yep, now does that seem worth two hours of BS to you? I didn't think so) But nooo. Comcrap (comcast) wanted to run our poor asses in circles. It pissed off my mother like I never saw before! TWO HOURS for this?!

I get online. Whoopity daw! New comp with USB piece of junk not only causes new computer to be sluggish and not connect to many web sights. It makes mother's computer slugish to. I was so mad, and hurt that this wasn't working after the abuse we took! I unplugged my new computer in tears, boxed up it's lovely new mouse, and key board. And put them away to gather dust. 800 f*****g dollars! OUch ouch OUCH! (Thank you comcrap!)

All I want..... is to play world of warcraft, access WP, and other web sights, not whitness the phone line screw up, not whitness my mother's comp screew up. Just to GET ONLINE AND @#$ PLAY! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!?

*Screams*

Please, someone tell me they got two computers on one network without thie card mess up @#$. PLEASE?! Someone?

I've run a set up with 2 computers and to get ONE connection.
I've done this in 3 ways.

1x with a USB modem plugged directly into one computer and internet connection sharing. Can be fiddely but I prefer using number 2
2x I used a cable connection to plug into a network switch and call the company to allow more than one IP address for the connection
3x similar to 1) but with added safety and using 3 computers

1x - with the USB modem, I plugged in an ethernet cable directly between computers and enabled Internet Connection Sharing from the computer that has the modem. The problem with this setup is the computer plugged directly into the modem will have priority
2x Enabling a Star network is more reliable as it has a maximum speed of around 12.8MB/ps or better known as 100Mib
Direct connection into the network hub/switch from the modem, then plug each computer into the network hub/switch. I use a switch as this is faster and a hub uses the same technology as a bus topology (which is slower)
3x I use a "server" -"peer" type connection where the third computer was plugged in directly to the modem, then plugged in the network switch/hub to the computer and plugged in computers 1 and 2 into the network switch. This is quite reliable as the "server" acts like a router. It means the 2 computers need the same gateway IP address as the "server" IP
Another advantage with "server" "peer" is that I can use the "server" as extra storage.

Methods 2 and 3 are the more reliable as only the needed computer can be powered up, whereas method 3 is the one where the "server" needs to remain powered up all the time

Is this on Vista? The default network drivers for it are broken.

You can share a dsl modem without usb here is how.
EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch BEFSR41 This one.
3 network cables
2 network card like this EtherFast® 10/100 LAN Card LNE100TX or the lan plugs in
both computers.
Step 1 Connect 1 network wire from the dsl modem lan out plug to the Routers internet in plug. That is what the 3 feet/ 1 meter network cables are for.
Step 2 plug a network cable from the Router to your computers lan card or lan plug in the back. I'm guessing the dsl modem is in the same room as your computer so get a cable to covers the distance.
Step 3 a network cable for your moms computer to the lan card or lan plug.
hope this helps.

So, the same as what I said in my star topology in number 2?

Sometimes getting a company to sort out an ethernet cable connection can be tricky as phone lines are predominantly A/DSL connections used with USB modems and ethernet connections are usually Cable by default.

Any Cat5 cable is enough for todays standards, and the old Cat4 are not common now anyway as they have a limit to how much data they can carry

Welcome to the club. If only there was a weelky support group on Tuesdays. Everyone who has ever had Comcast hates their guts. They are a terrible corporation, and a monopoly.

The more I read this, the more glad I am that I have DSL from AT&T. While their customer service is by no means great, I was still able to get my problem resolved in an hour, and the people on the phone were very patient with me. I have no use for the high speeds that Comcast advertises, and my frustrations were minimal.

So if you truly hate Comcast, switch to DSL. You might not get significant improvements, but it's choosing the "lesser of two evils" principle, like when you vote for the president.

And I thought Cox sucked... yeesh. That's beyond pathetic. I usually only have to yell at my guys for about 20 mins.

All you need to do is get a router or a switch... it will allow both computers to be wired in. Sometimes you have to call and tell them you bought a new box, sometimes just unplugging the modem and waiting about 30 mins for them to realise it's gone is enough.

Good luck getting those fu***rs off your back.

I thought of something else LiendaBalla. Are you using a cable modem or a dsl modem i forgot to ask. From your post it sounds like you have 1 dsl modem and 1 cable modem did i read that right ? If so run 1 per computer and look it might have a network plug out look like a phone plug only a bit wider. Or you can ask for a new modem from comcast that has a network plug no usb.

Stay away from Comcast, even dial-up is better then the internet that they offer. We had Charter cable internet for a while, but switched over to DSL (att) for stability. We havn't had a problem for over two years
