I think I am 'hearing things', at night only. I'm getting quite confused. I often hear screaming - would i hear screaming often if my house is on a busy road? Last night I thought I heard a radio with people talking, then I thought maybe there were just people outside, but I could still hear the 'radio fuzz'. Recently, I heard someone shout my name when there was no one there.
Is it possible these are 'tricks of sound' like you get 'tricks of the light' ie. I'm hearing something like a car going past but my brain distorts it into screaming.
I think I get trapped between awake and dreaming sometimes... I don't know... I seem to hear screaming most often when I feel trapped in sleep and trying to wake up - is that sleep paralysis?

How do I tell if what I'm hearing is real?

I don't have any answers, other than to say I experience the same thing and have for a long time. I hear people screaming, sometimes very loudly, but in reality, no one is screaming at all. I hear lawn mowers, but of course, there are no lawn mowers. I hear the radio sound, with a distant voice/DJ talking, but I can't make out what he's saying, and of course, that's not really there either. For a long time I heard swarms of bees which was insanely disturbing. I was actually convinced there were bees nesting in the walls of my house, and brought it up to my dad as a serious problem that we should look in to. I thought the bees were real for a long time, but the radio, the screaming and the lawn mower I knew were all not really there.

If you find anything more about it, let me know!

Sometimes I hear things that aren't there. I hear the TV on, people talking about me, sometimes yelling, and other sounds as well. But I have been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. My auditory hallucinations don't happen that often. Maybe once a day but I am on a high dose of Invega which is an anti psychotic. Have you all been diagnosed with some kind of psychotic disorder?

No. I have no symptoms of psychosis (and I have seen a psychiatrist)

This only ever happens at night is the thing that makes me think it's not like a hallucination. Most of it could be real sounds but it seems unlikely to me somehow, but maybe I'm just getting creeped out.

Pollux - you're not epileptic are you, by any chance? I know that's something that can cause hallucinations. I've read things that imply quite a few people experience hallucinations for no known reason but don't talk about it because they're scared of being told they're crazy.

I hear banging noises on the outside of my house sometimes, they are faint like a small branch hitting the house, but it only happens late at night and I only hear them when I am in my room

I had something like this happen, I was playing my gameboy color and after I turned it off for an hour I could still hear the music from my Pokemon game in my head. I am not sure of the name of what it is but if I am not mistaken your brain remembers stuff in audio, and there is no off switch.

I'm not epileptic or diagnosed with schizophrenia or anything, just your average Aspie. When I hear the noises, it is always at night, too.

PhilosopherBoi, I always have that happen when I play my DS or XBox360 - images and sounds from the games will replay in my head for hours afterwards. But this night noise thing isn't the same - it's not a "recording" of anything I've actually heard, it's more like it is created on it's own.

Kajjie - It sounds (no pun intended!) like we are experiencing the same thing. I'll ask my doctor about it when I go next week and maybe find out more about it.

Haha! I don't think I'd have noticed the uninentional pun unless you pointed it out.
Tell me if you find out anything about it. :)

Are you on any medications? A friend was taking one of the antidepressant they use to help quit smoking, and she started hearing voices while she was on it, as did two other people that she was quitting with. Sometimes, the meds do more than they're supposed to and make odd connections. Is it becoming a problem interfering with life? I occasionally will hear distant conversations when there is no one around, but I've learned to accept it and ignore it.

Kajjie, if it bothers you you can try antipsychotics to silence the voices in your head. Or you can try ot have pleasant conversations with them. Maybe you're psychic and can talk to the dead or people who are having out of body experiences and coming to you. I think you can develop that power and get more talented at hearing them and actually establishing 2-way communication with them.

No, I'm not on any new medications. My friend's mum had really realistic hallucinations while taking a new hayfever medicine - really strange side effect!

It's not a big problem at all, I just want to know what's going on. I want to know if it's possible the screaming is that there are actually people screaming outside my house. Would that happen often?

Ana54 - can't have conversations with them as it's never people talking to me.

Maybe you have very good hearing ? Track the sound down if you can. Streetlights can have a humming sound 60 hertz or even 400 hertz from a power transformer.
